Agenda Item #8: Candidate Presentations – VP Communications Information

Purpose: To provide an opportunity for the candidates to address the Board of Trustees prior to the vice presidential election, which will be conducted on Saturday morning, April 29, 2017. Eligible voters include all voting members of the Board of Trustees.

History and Background: The candidates for 2018-2019 vice president, education, are Haley Blakeman, ASLA, and Scott Emmelkamp, ASLA. The candidates’ biographical statements are attached.

Governing Rules/Procedures: ASLA Bylaws, Section 828, Election Policy: 828. The acceptance of nomination for office is a nominee’s expression of willingness to serve the Society with maximum diligence and ability in the office for which nominated; therefore, the following policy shall govern the election of officers: 828.1 All written statements about the nominees shall be restricted to the material published by the Society. 828.2 No nominee shall write, or cause to be written, letters or campaign propaganda to be published or circulated. There shall be no derogatory remarks or insinuations concerning any nominee and nothing should be written or spoken that could be construed as an attempt to belittle any nominee’s qualifications for office. No chapter shall take an official stand in favor of a nominee from the chapter area or any other area or publish or circulate campaign propaganda on behalf of any nominee. 828.3 Any member, not a nominee, has the privilege of seeking the support of colleagues on behalf of a nominee by means of verbal or written contacts. 828.4 The acceptance of nomination to any office in the Society shall be understood to mean that each nominee subscribes to the above statements of election policy and shall act in accordance with them. 828.5 This statement of election policy of the Society and the condition of the acceptance of nomination shall be provided to each nominee and shall be published by the Society and included in the election documents

Haley Blakeman, ASLA

Candidate for 2018-2019 Vice President, Communications

Biographical Statement Haley Blakeman is a licensed landscape architect and a certified planner with 18 years of professional experience. She holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning degree from the University of New Orleans and a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree from the Louisiana State University. She has worked with landscape architecture, engineering and architecture firms, and now leads the implementation team for a non-profit planning company, Center for Planning Excellence (CPEX). She has been involved at all levels of design from concept to construction details, long-term planning to implementation, and project management. Through her work at CPEX, she contributes to best practice models, leads outreach, engagement and education of diverse stakeholders and creates citizen-driven, quality design solutions.

Haley has a progressive view of the role of landscape architects as community leaders and conveners and is passionate about communicating the profession’s value on local boards and committees, in universities and schools, and nationally through ASLA’s public relations videos.

Scott Emmelkamp, ASLA

Candidate for 2018-2019 Vice President, Communications

Biographical Statement Scott Emmelkamp has continuously promoted landscape architecture through his various professional and personal leadership roles. His nomination as a candidate for VP of Communications is an honor and, if elected, he’s committed to performing his duties at the highest level. Scott’s qualifications include extensive experience in organizational leadership, an unyielding passion for the profession, and a steadfast commitment to ASLA.

Experience – Scott has twenty-nine years in the private sector leading projects throughout the US and internationally for large and mid-sized multidisciplinary firms; the last six years as Principal of a successful landscape architecture firm. His professional service includes four years as vice-chair of the City of Manchester Planning & Zoning Commission, nine years on the Fay Jones School of Architecture Professional Advisory Committee (including serving as President), currently he is Chair of the Washington University MLA Program Advisory Council and Vice President of the St. Louis Open Space Council where he has been a board member since 2012.

Passion – Spreading the word and knowledge about the profession by speaking at schools, conferences, and garden clubs, as well as volunteering at river clean up and invasive species removal events.

Commitment - Active participation in ASLA including during college when he served as Student Chapter President and was valedictorian for the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture class of 1987. Scott is an active member of the St. Louis Chapter serving numerous EXCOM roles including secretary, member at large, chair of the public relations committee, and President (two terms - 18 years apart). At the national level, Scott is on the Board of Trustees and has served on numerous national committees including public relations, leadership development, membership services, and ethics. In 2000, Scott was Host Chapter Co-Chair for ASLA’s Annual Meeting in St. Louis.

If elected VP of Communications, Scott will focus his efforts on identifying ways to simplify our message to appeal to a broader audience, build upon the strengths of Landscape Architecture Magazine and other publications, and explore options to expand our social media presence to increase exposure and understanding our profession and ASLA.
