State Council Meeting July 8 th 2014

1. Shirley Heights now known as PCAV Park and will be registered as such. Several items to be upgraded immediately: Power needs to be upgraded to an appropriate standard of compliance. Indoor arena will be upgraded to include skylights and new surface material ‘equitex’ which will be mixed with sand. Equitex is known as the ‘best in the world’ and is currently used at WEG. The current surface is being removed and relocated elsewhere on the property.

An Open Day will be arranged for clubs interested in visiting the complex.

First State level events likely to be held in 2015. However, zones/clubs can hold dressage only clinics or camps the facility once aforementioned upgrades have been done.

Neil Clinton has offered his expertise within the area of XC.

PCAV would like to form a subcommittee to secure sponsorship for the park and are proposing one from each zone. If interested contact Darrelyn.

2. Reminder: By January 2015 clubs with more than 20 riders need to have one NCAS level coach at rallies. If clubs are using qualified EA coaches then this is an acceptable substitution for a NCAS level coach. An audit of clubs will take place so that clubs who need support can be identified.

Two ‘games specific’ coaches were assessed last weekend.

NCAS level 2 coaches training rollout will commence in 2017

3. Gow Gates is the new PCAV insurance underwriter and a link to their services will be provided on the PCAV website. Personal accident claims can now be done online. However, this facility is not available for public liability claims. On the Gow Gates website risk management guides are available. These mirror PCAV and are a useful tool.

Once strength returns are completed Gow Gates will email Certificate of Currency to all club secretaries. Congratulations to every club in our zone – all strength returns done! Wahoo!!!

In Open sections, on production of EA or HRCAV current cards the $10 insurance fee will be waived. However, the day attendance form must be completed.

24/7 insurance cover still applies for all non-income earning equestrian activities.

NCAS level 1 coaches REGISTERED with PCAV are provided with 24/7 accident insurance and public liability

4. Constitution – reminder that these need to be brought in line with the 2012 changes.

5. PCAV Face Book site – must ‘like’ to gain updates

2 6. Games – Entry forms for Interzone Teams Prince Phillip Mounted Games Challenge are available on the PCAV website. The entry forms are to be sent to me by the due date, Monday 4 th August as advertised on the entry form. No late entries can be accepted because they are due from me to PCAV by the 8th August.

If clubs are interested in Games instruction the National Mounted Games coaches are VERY happy to assist. Contact Kate at the PCAV office to book their services.

7. Nationals will be held in South Australia in 2015. A tetrathlon competition will be included. This includes three phases – swimming, shooting and riding.

8. PCAV AGM will be held at the PCAV office. Mackie Road, Mulgrave on 12th October 2014, registration 9.30 for a 10.00AM start.

Zone Chief Instructor’s Report

Activities since April meeting:

Speed to Safety: First qualifier 21st June The Speed to Safety sessions are designed to train young riders how to ride safely to optimum times over a given distance. This gives riders the ability to control how fast they are travelling at a safe and balanced rhythm and speed. Riders can then apply this important skill when competing Cross Country or in a Show Jumping event where time penalties are often the difference between being placed or not.

Riders have to ride at a pre-determined speed. Grade 1 and 2 riders at 550m/min and grade 3 and 4 riders at 500 m/min. At our first session on April 21st, after the briefing from Lisa Coffey and Ralph Gallagher Stony Creek’s CEO, riders warmed up on the sand track and then individually galloped from the 1000m mark to the finish post. They were given feedback on their times and riding before another attempt where the closest to the given time, after completing the respective distance were heralded the winner of the “Speed to Safety” event.

3 The riders with the best results over the two days will be given the opportunity to represent our region at Mooney Valley Racecourse and Equitana in November. Results for this first event for Grade 3 and 4 riders equal first was Maddy Chalmers from Wonthaggi Pony Club and Georgie Filippi from Bass Pony Club, in second place was Ebony Simrajh, from Phillip Island Pony Club. Riders from Berry’s Creek, Meeniyan and Pakenham Pony Clubs also competed on the day.

Lisa Coffey from Racing Victoria addressed riders about the racing industry and diverse job opportunities. The love of the track and riding track work drew her to a career with racehorses. She is now the Racing Victoria’s workforce development officer. In Lisa’s spare time she rides track work for Peter Moody.

Riders learnt a lot from Lisa’s great coaching along with the wonderful opportunity to gallop in a controlled and safe environment. Thanks to the Stony Creek Racing Committee for allowing our young riders to use their beautiful facilities. Entry forms with the details for the next “Speed to Safety” day to be held at Stony Creek Race Course on August the 2nd 2014 can be found on the West Gippsland Zone Website

Coming up in December: Michelle Debenham is developing a WGZ Young Ambassador program similar to the EA Young Rider Program. We hope to run this program in December 2014.

Coaching clinic with Megan Jones on 12th July at Roosendaal Farm funded by Country Action Grant. We had 21 coaches attend the training. Megan is a wonderful coach that can teach children or the highest levels. She emphasised the importance of good position, balance, and effective aids especially the weight aid. It was great to see so many coaches and club officials attend the day. Thanks to the riders for the day, Molly Barry from Berry’s Creek, Emily Hill from Loch Nyora, Adeline Collins from Corner Inlet, Skye and Chloe Aldie from Philip Island, Zoe Waller from Warragul , Caitlyn Porter from Cannibal Creek and , Jessica Ronalds Berry’s Creek.
