Grapes of Wrath- 2016 Reading and Comp Assignment Schedule

Reading Schedule:

Please stay up with the reading in case there is a pop-quiz

Chapters 1-7: Read by Wednesday/Thursday November 9 and 10

Chapters 8-12: Read by Monday November 14

Chapters 13-17: Read by November 16/17 Wednesday and Thursday

Chapters 18-21: Read by

Chapters 22 to the end- Read by November 21

You may have to read ahead a bit, depending on which comp you choose.

Composition #1: Wednesday ( 0 hour) and Thursday November 16/17

Word count- Each paragraph 400- 500 words. Make sure to put the word count after EACH paragraph

Write three separate extended paragraphs. Each will explain how a separate era of literature is evidenced in Grapes of Wrath.

Eras:  Romantic  Realist  Modernism ( may have to research a bit)

Composition #2- Required for all students Tuesday November 15 Word Count- None because it is NOT in essay format

Modeling and Color marking Assignment: This assignment will help you with your writing style, structure, and organization of essays.

Both of these will be modeled in class.

Modeling: You will choose one (1) paragraph from anywhere in Chapters 1-4 from Grapes of Wrath. You will re-type this paragraph triple spacing among the lines. Then above each of the words, identify each part of speech. Parts of Speech: nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, preposition, interjections, and conjunctions

Color Marking: This segment will be assigned at least one week prior to its due date. Also it will be modeled for you. You will provide a key for your literary devices shown from Grapes of Wrath as well as a distinct writing style of John Steinbeck’s.

Composition #3: Friday December 2

(If we block) I may change the date on this one Word Count- total of 1100-1200 words TOTAL

Write (4) four separate paragraphs; however, it be ONE word count and formatted as ONE essay. The essay will just be four paragraphs

Each will represent a different character from the list below. It will be supported with various quotes from Grapes of Wrath.

Character list: Grandpa, Ma, Tom, and Casy

Each of the paragraphs needs to analyze the applicability of this quote from Dorthea Lange

Composition #4 due Wednesday and Thursday December 7 and 8 Write a 1100- 1200 -word essay where you analyze Steinbeck’s style of writing, paying particular attention to his intercalary and narrative techniques used in this novel.
