I. Call to order: A. Meeting called to order at 2:00 by Chair Susan Morgan. B. The minutes of the 2009 meeting were approved unanimously.

II. Nominations and Elections A. Sign up for paper reviewers was circulated. B. Ballots for elections for Vice Chair Elect, Secretary, and Student Representative were distributed. Additional nominations were made from the floor. C. All candidates were allowed to introduce themselves. The election results were as follows. a. Vice Chair Elect: Lance Rintamaki, State University of NY University at Buffalo b. Secretary: Truman Keys, Western Connecticut State University c. Student Representative: Terra Moody, University of Alabama

III. Officer Reports: A. Chair Report: Susan Morgan 1. Susan noted that the HC division is the 4th largest at NCA. 2. Susan reported on several events from Legislative Assembly. a. A task force was formed on restructuring unit representation. b. NCA is in excellent financial health. c. Students of Color grants were not discontinued.

B. Vice Chair Report: Kami Silk 1. Submission Report: Kami thanked the paper readers for their service (each reviewer received 12-14 papers). 224 submissions (203 papers and 21 panels). 115 papers, 11 scholar-to-scholar presentations, and 4 panels accepted. All accepted submissions received three “accepts” from reviewers. 2. All panels included five papers. Kami noted that the division is seeking feedback about the number of papers on panels. 3. Kami noted that those papers selected for the scholar-to-scholar panel were NOT those with the lowest scores. They were selected from across the score spectrum. 4. It was noted that the room for the business meeting was big enough to hold everyone this year.

C. Vice Chair Elect Report: Nicole Egbert 1. Nicole will be planning the 2011 conference’s health communication panels in New Orleans. The conference theme will be “voice.” 2. Nicole notes that Richard West is planning a number of unique initiatives for the New Orleans conference that provide opportunities for volunteerism. 3. The conference will feature a new submission system.

IV. Award Presentations: A. Dave Buller noted that the MA Thesis of the Year award was awarded at ICA this year. Then he presented the Dissertation of the Year award to Shelly R. Hovick of the MD Anderson Cancer Center (her advisor was Vicki Friemuth). B. The top paper award were presented to: a. “Sticks and stones might break my bones, but typed words will really hurt me: Testing a cyberbullying victimization intervention” by Douglas Deiss (Arizona Statue University) and Matthew Savage (Arizona State University) (also the Top Student Paper) b. “Measuring mediated uncertainty: Scientific uncertainty in online cancer news” by Ryan Hurley (North Carolina State University), Kami Kosenko (North Carolina State University), and Dale Brashers (in memoriam) c. “The role of efficacy in emotional appeals: Moderator, mediator or main effect?” by Monique Turner (University of Maryland), Jill Underhill (University of Maryland), and Christine Skubisz (University of Maryland) d. “The impact of donor versus need-focused messages on intentions to engage in family discussion about organ donation” by James Robinson (University of Dayton), Teri Thompson (University of Dayton), Yan Tian (University of Missouri, St. Louis), and Robert Agne (Auburn University) C. Susan presented the Article of the Year Award to Maria Knight Lapinski and Rajiv Rimal for (2005) An explication of social norms. Communication Theory, 15, 127-147. D. Susan presented the Book of the Year Award to Wayne Beach’s (2009) A Natural History of Family Cancer: International Resources for Managing Illness. E. Gary Kreps presented the Outstanding Scholar Award to K. Vish Viswanath, Harvard School of Public Health

V. New Business: A. A resolution passed that the Book of the Year has to have been published at least five years prior to the award. B. Susan opened a discussion about the possibility of creating an endowed award in honor of Dale Brashers. It was decided that a task force would be put together to work on this issue, led by Lance Rintamaki. C. Kami discussed business of the Coalition for Health Communication. a. She announced a logo competition with a monetary prize. b. An ethics committee has been comprised that has identified guidelines. c. There is a draft of a white paper.

VI. Announcements from the Floor: A. Dave Buller explains that the ICA/NCA thesis and dissertation awards are changing their application requirements (this is not something in the by-laws, so no movement is necessary). a. The application procedure will consist of two stages. First, everyone will turn in a five page abstract in English. b. Second, the top abstract writers will be invited to submit a 30 page abstract in English. c. This will allow those who need to spend money on translation to know that their investment is more likely to pay off. B. It was announced that the Melanoma Foundation is sponsoring a paper competition for graduate and undergraduate students with a $500.00 prize. C. Gary Kreps announced the D.C. area Health Communication Conference (which will alternate every other year with the Kentucky Health Communication Conference). D. Monique Turner announced that ICA received 300 paper submissions for the upcoming conference in Boston.

VII. Passing of the gavel: A. Susan Morgan passed the gavel to Kami Silk.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:15 p.m.
