COURSE TITLE: Introduction to Convention/Meeting Management COURSE NUMBER: HOSP 171 PREREQUISITES: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment or successful completion of ENGL 025 Introduction to College Writing II, ENGL 032 Reading Strategies for College II, and MATH 044 Mathematics. CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the convention/meeting management industry including the roles of various service providers, space requirements, and uses of convention facilities.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course the student will be expected to:

1. Identify aspects of convention/meeting management. 2. Analyze the growth and coinciding changes that this industry has experienced and project trends for the industry. 3. Construct a basic framework for planning a meeting, convention, or exposition. 4. Demonstrate the skills necessary for interacting with various service providers involved in the industry. 5. Compare and contrast types of convention facilities. 6. Construct a space utilization plan.

Ivy Tech Community College Page 1 of 5 HOS 171 Planning and Education MINIMUM FACULTY CREDENTIALS: A qualified faculty member in Hospitality Administration is one who has an earned baccalaureate or higher degree, from a regionally accredited institution, with academic preparation and/or work experience appropriate to the course and/or specialty being taught, and who has professional certification in the field.

Cheating on papers, tests or other academic works is a violation of College rules. This may include, but is not limited to, plagiarism or other forms of academic dishonesty such as the acquisition without permission of tests or other academic materials and/or distribution of these materials and other academic work. ATTENDANCE: Regular attendance is expected at scheduled class meetings or other activities assigned as part of a course of instruction. Instructors keep attendance records. When personal circumstances make it impossible to attend scheduled classes and activities, the college expects students to confer with instructors in advance. Work missed due to unexcused absence cannot be made up. Depending on the circumstances the instructor has the option of allowing students to make up the material missed.

Instructors in awarding grades and considering involuntary withdrawal will consider absences. Students are not excused from completion of the course work and should make arrangements with their instructors to complete all work.

For every 2 tardies, the student will be given an absence. The student also understands that it is the policy of the Hospitality Administration program that absences in excess of two (2) will result in a reduction of one (1) letter grade for each additional absence.

Guidelines for completion of assignments:

Objective paper – Submit a 1- or 2-page paper, typed, and doubled space in 12 point font. Provide an analysis of one objective from the list of objectives at the beginning of the chapter. The analysis should be written in your own words demonstrating your understanding of industry terminology and procedures. All documents should be submitted in Microsoft Word.

Vocabulary - Select a minimum of 5 words from the chapter scheduled for discussion in the upcoming class. Provide a definition of each term in your own words. Paper should be typed in 12 point font with each definition single-spaced and double-spaced between each term. All documents should be submitted in Microsoft Word.

On-site Lab – You will have the opportunity to assist in the planning and execution of two Ivy Tech events (1) a student recognition luncheon held in conjunction with a board of directors meeting and (2) the annual weekend with the Pacers.

3/22/06 Luncheon & meeting at Lilly Conference Center, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. (Class will meet on site at 2 p.m. – Business attire is required) There is no cost to you for this activity.

3/25/06 Pacers Weekend – Registration & Hospitality at Hilton Garden Inn, 12-5 p.m. There is no cost to you for this activity (except parking).

3/26/06 *Pacers Weekend – Pre-game party at Conseco Fieldhouse, 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.

*Game tickets are required to participate in this activity. If you select this as your on-site lab, you will be required to pay 50% of the cost of the ticket to the Pacers game. You will receive the pre-game party ticket at no cost. Additional tickets for the game and pre- game party may be purchased at full price.

Career project: You will be required to provide a 3-5 minute overview on your project . Business attire is required for this in-class presentation. Detailed directions for completion of the project will be provided.
