Location: New York Position: Visuals Editor, ChinaFile, Center on U.S. – China Relations (Grade 6) - 1713
Purpose:
ChinaFile, an online magazine published by the Center on U.S.-China Relations at Asia Society, reports on and provides analysis across a wide spectrum of topics in writing, photography, and video. We devote our energy to underreported subjects, innovative and elegant storytelling, experts interested in engaging non-experts, Chinese analysts who want to write for international audiences, and questions we feel haven’t been adequately explained by other publications. Our contributors are journalists, scholars, and other experts working both inside and outside of China.
The Visuals Editor is responsible for researching, developing, selecting, editing, and layout of visual imagery of wire and commissioned photography, production of web documentary video and graphics, as well as oversight of the online platform.
Responsibilities:
Oversee visual content and identity on ChinaFile.com and its social media accounts
Establish a strong editorial voice through selection of wire and commissioned photography, video, and graphics
Develop longform photography and web video documentary features
Collaborate with contributors and editors to meet the visual needs of commissioned work and syndicated pieces
Oversee the Abigail Cohen Fellowship in Documentary Photography and relationship with partner Magnum Foundation
Negotiate usage fees and image rights
Develop a network of visual journalists
Commission and oversee photographers, videographers, and graphic artists, determining schedule and budget and editorial development
Provide feedback to visual journalists on commissioned work
Distribute engaging images and videos across available social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vimeo, Weibo, etc.) Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
College degree and 3-4 years experience working in photojournalism/visual journalism at a digital news organization. Previous experience with magazines, newspapers or websites preferred
Enthusiasm for news, current affairs, and international news
Strong journalism ethics
Knowledge of current terrain of camera/video/editing software from HD capture to mobile phones
Experience editing and processing digital still photography
Experience editing in-depth single topic videos 10-20 minutes in length
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite Software, including Photoshop, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects
Chinese language skills and knowledge of China a plus
Familiarity with website development and content management systems (Drupal 7, Wordpress, etc.) a plus
Intermediate HTML, CSS, and PHP coding experience a plus
