Jones County Safe and Health Youth Coalition page 1 of 2 Wednesday, 3/13/13

Meeting opened at 11:45 am with introductions. 24 members were present: Angie Jess, Bill Feldmann, Bob George, Carrie Johnson, Ed Ahouse, Greg Graver, Heather Weers, Jacki Luckstead, Jeanette Shoop, Jennifer Husmann, Jim Johnson, Keith Dirks, Kelly Dodge, LaVonne Owen, Linda Fanton, Lindsey Ungs, Lori Reynolds, Lynette Otten, Patti Bammert, Phil Owen, Shannon Appleby, Kassy Rice, Ericka Johnson, and Heidi Reynolds.

Motion was made by Lori Reynolds to approve the minutes from the February Coalition meeting and the Executive meeting. Motion was seconded by Bill Feldmann. Motion was approved by the Coalition members, all ayes, no nays.

MARKETING Phil Owen gave information on last night’s event, “Dangers Hidden in Plain Sight.” This was a great event attended by approximately 130 people. Jennifer Husmann thanked all those that helped with this event.

Jennifer Husmann and Jacki Luckstead gave an update on the posters that the BEASTS group has been working on. The posters are ready to go and the theme is “Be the Majority.” These posters will be placed in the High Schools and the Middle Schools in Jones County, and also in the community.

Jennifer announced that there are window stickers available for the “Text to Tell” program.

Lori Reynolds made a motion to approve spending $1000 on new yard/graduation signs. Motion was seconded by Bill Feldmann. Motion was approved by the Coalition members, all ayes, no nays. These new signs can be used all year long. Also available are the graduation yard signs remaining from last year.

SPF SIG update Patti Bammert informed the group the that the Consumption Under legal Age Ordinance will go in effect this week after publication in the local papers. Summary sheets are available and were sent to all the schools in Jones County. Some of the schools sent the summary to parents by e-mail.

Patti also informed the group the Iowa Division of the ABD will be hosting a town hall meeting in order to educate all liquor license holders in Jones County in regards to the current laws that affect them. Preliminary planning is for the town hall meeting to be held in April and in May offer a TIPs trainings.

DFC Application Bill Feldmann made a motion to approve the DFC grant action plan. Motion was seconded by Jacki Luckstead. Motion was approved by the Coalition members, all ayes, no nays. This application for an additional 5 year grant will be submitted on Tuesday 3/19/13.

Linda Fanton made a motion to approve the corresponding budget for the DFC grant application. Motion was seconded by Lori Reynolds. Motion was approved by the Coalition members, all ayes, no nays.

Sustainability Jacki Luckstead informed the Coalition group about the need to start planning for sustainability. There is no guarantee that we will be approved for another 5 year grant. We need to determine specifically what needs to be sustained and what resources are available. Jacki suggested that a Sustainability sub committee should be formed to work on this. Phil Owen volunteered to be a member of this sub committee. Please contact Jacki or Jennifer if you would be willing to help. Mentor Coalition Jacki Luckstead made a motion to approve the JCSHYC to become a Mentor Coalition for Jackson County. Motion was seconded by Shannon Appleby. Jackson County is applying for a 2 year Mentor Grant and has requested that Jones County be their mentor in order to get ready to apply for a 5 year DFC grant.

Satisfaction Survey Bill Feldmann reported that 22 individuals completed the satisfaction survey. The Executive Committee has reviewed the results and identified specific items that can be improved. Watch for changes to come.

MIDYEAR CONFERENCE The midyear CADCA conference will be in Austin, Texas, July 21st through July 25th. The Coalition is looking to send 2 or 3 students (maximum of 4 students). 2 adult chaperones are needed for this trip. Please contact Jennifer Husmann if interested.

Local Conditions Angie Jess talked to Deputy Sullivan and Chief Deputy Jeff Swisher and K9 checks will be happening. Jennifer also reported that Kris Kilburg will talk about the possible development of a school policy to have the K9 at the school at least twice per year. Lisa Beames is the new Anamosa Superintendent. Chris Anderson, Monticello Superintendent reported to Jennifer he was sending the correspondence about working on a tobacco free policy to the school attorney.

Other Sharing Lori Reynolds, Iowa Federation of Families, reported that 5/5 through 5/11 is Children’s Mental Health Awareness week. She is hoping that the towns and the county will recognize 5/9 as Child Mental Health Awareness Day. Information will be available at the Coalition office for the week of 5/5 through 5/11, Children’s Mental Health Awareness week.

The Day on the Hill went well. Sheriff Graver did a great job speaking at the press conference. The youth had a good day. The Social Host bill will be voted on in the House this week.

Patti Bammert let the group know that she has taken a job with Kirkwood teaching literacy and GED completion at the Anamosa State Penitentiary. Her last day working with us will be March 29. We wish Patti the best, and everyone thanked her for her great work on behalf of the Coalition! Jennifer will send out an e- mail inviting the group for a good-bye lunch soon.
