Rube Goldberg Project (70 points)
Groups of 2 to 3 People. It is an OUT OF CLASS project, so please find group members that you will be able to work with outside of class.
Presentations - Rube Goldberg’s creations included crazy machines that were designed to show a complicated way to perform a simple task. - Your task is to construct a Rube Goldberg type machine with a simple end task (for example, dropping a quarter into a piggy bank or squeezing toothpaste onto a toothbrush) - This will be an OUT OF CLASS project. You will not be using Legos for this project. You may not use parts from the game Mouse Trap.
Before the Event - Once the machine is in motion, NO human intervention is allowed. - You will be setting up your Rube Goldberg in Howe, ideally in the classroom. Your Rube Goldberg should be free-standing, and you should consider its size as we will have 10 to 15 projects in the classroom. Smaller is easier. Within the classroom, you can use the tables. If you want to set it up in the hallway or downstairs in Howe, just understand that you will only be able to set it up the day of. - The machine should have at least twelve CLEARLY VISIBLE steps. - Must have an example of each simple machine – including each type of lever. - Must have a theme AND a name for your machine. - No combustibles, flammables, fire or hazardous materials may be used. - Use of electricity is NOT permitted. - A detailed numbered list of steps MUST be turned in. o Must explain each step in detail: what it does, how it interacts with the next step, and what type of simple machine it is.
1st Submission: Draft sketch and brief description (general idea of each step) (5 Points)
During the Event: - Each group will be assigned a 5-10 minute period to demonstrate their machine. - Be prepared to answer questions from class members and/or instructors Total Point Break Down (70 Points Total): - 5 Points: Draft Sketch - 12 Points: Construction of machine (12 Points total- 1 point per step) - 33 Points: Presentation o 5 points for creativity o 8 verbal description o 10 for machine reliability: . If Machine works first time = 10 points . If Machine works on second try = 7 points . If Machine works on third try = 5 points o 10 for using each simple machine - 20 Points: Final DETAILED sketch and DETAILED numbered list of steps
