Changing diapers, arranging play dates, driving car pools, calming squabbling siblings, attending musicals and sporting events, chaperoning proms, coaching teams, helping with college applications…moms have a lot of responsibilities. They also tend to be fairly critical about their performance as parents.

A 2015 survey from Pew Research found millennial mothers are the most confident group in regards to parenting performance. Here are the numbers:1

All moms: 51 percent say they are doing a very good job as a parent Millennial moms: 57 percent say they are doing a very good job as a parent Gen Xer moms: 48 percent say they are doing a very good job as a parent Baby Boomer moms: 41 percent say they are doing a very good job as a parent

Scientists have been mapping our mothers’ brains! They haven’t found eyes in the back of her head, or a way to help her worry less, but they are beginning to understand the mother-child bond better:1

“After centuries of observing behavioral changes in new mothers, scientists are only recently beginning to definitively link the way a woman acts with what's happening in her prefrontal cortex, midbrain, parietal lobes, and elsewhere. Gray matter becomes more concentrated. Activity increases in regions that control empathy, anxiety, and social interaction. On the most basic level, these changes, prompted by a flood of hormones during

This Mother’s Day, celebrate your relationship with your mom. You changed her life and outlook, and she influenced yours.

We know we’re not as persuasive as your mother, but if you haven’t come in for a portfolio review in a while, it’s time you do!

LPL Compliance Approval # 1-374034 [Subject line] What Makes Your Mom So Special?

When you think “Mom,” it’s likely your brain conjures up a scent or a story or a song that feels like home. Here are a few inspiring and heartfelt words that have been written about the value and importance of mothers:

“A mother enables you to realize that there are different levels of beauty and therein lie the sources of pleasure, some of which are popular and ordinary, and thus of brief value, and others of which are difficult and rare, and hence worth pursuing." --Amy Tan, Saving Fish from Drowning1

“Sometimes the strength of motherhood is greater than natural laws.” --Barbara Kingsolver, Homeland and Other Stories2

“And from her great and humble position in the family she had taken dignity and a clean calm beauty. From her position as healer, her hands had grown sure and cool and quiet; from her position as arbiter she had become as remote and faultless in judgment as a goddess. She seemed to know that if she swayed the family shook, and if she ever really deeply wavered or despaired the family would fall, the family will to function would be gone.” --John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath3

"I am sure that if the mothers of various nations could meet, there would be no more wars" 2

LPL Compliance Approval # 1-186456 [Subject line] Celebrating Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a celebration of the work that mothers do, both in the home and outside of the home. Ann Marie Reeves Jarvis and her daughter, Anna Jarvis—the mother and daughter duo who frequently are credited with founding Mother’s Day—worked to improve the lives of people within their community and promote healing after the Civil War.

The Jarvis women set up Mothers Day Work Clubs in West Virginia during the mid- 1800s. Through the clubs, they taught basic nursing and the principles of sanitation to other women in their community. Club members cared for families with tubercular mothers, provided medicine to the indigent, and inspected milk intended for children. Their efforts saved countless lives.

During the Civil War, the local railroad became a military target for both the North and South. The Women’s Day Clubs declared neutrality and provided assistance and care, which was badly needed when typhoid broke out, to both Union and Confederate soldiers. Ann Jarvis continued to lead the clubs’ efforts despite losing four of her children to the disease.

After the war, as soldiers from both armies returned home to West Virginia, tensions rose. The Jarvis women recognized the need to promote healing within their community. They organized Mothers' Friendship Day to help remind people of all that they had in 4

Mother’s Day is a celebration of the work mothers do both in the home and outside the home. Appreciation is shown by sending cards, delivering flowers, and presenting gifts to Mom.

Many countries celebrate Mother’s Day with traditions very similar to ours in the United States, but others have their own traditions you may want to consider making part of your Mother’s Day celebration:

 The French are known for their rich food and, on Mother’s Day, mothers are presented with a cake that looks like a bouquet of flowers.  In Mexico, children go to Mom’s home the night before Mother’s Day.  The United Kingdom was the first country to dedicate a day to mothers in the 1600’s. To celebrate Mom, a rich almond cake is given.  Within the last 10 years, India has begun to celebrate Mother’s Day. On this day, everyone is encouraged to think about the hardships and sacrifices made by Mom.

Mother’s Day is about more than where to go for dinner or sending a card and the people of India reflect that perfectly. Share with your Mom what you appreciate about her today.

On this Mother’s Day, we would like to offer our thanks to mothers everywhere for their good works, sacrifices, and common sense.

This year, instead of celebrating Mother’s Day, show your appreciation by celebrating Mother’s Week. Every day – from May 3 through May 9 – say or do one thing that will let your mother know how much you appreciate her. Here are a few ways you can make Mom feel like a million bucks:

 Drop off a different flower every day with a note of gratitude for something she did for you. On Mother’s Day, give her a bouquet or flowering plant for her garden.  If she lives in another city, send your mom a card each day with a message of appreciation for something she did for you. On Mother’s Day, send a cake or a bottle of champagne.  Each day send a letter, with pictures, that describes your memories of a specific event. You can enlist the help of friends and family members. On Mother’s Day, give her a scrapbook to hold the letters.

Give some thought to the ways in which your Mom has helped you become the person you are, and then decide how to show your appreciation.

LPL Compliance Approval # 533105 [Subject line] Mothers are Important!

In the maelstrom of organizational details – big and little – that besiege most mothers, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and taken for granted. Restore your perspective by reading the thoughts of some elementary school children about their moms. It may remind you why you are so very, very important!

Why did you get your mother and not another mother?  God knew she likes me a lot more than other people's moms like me.  We’re related.

What was your mom like when she was little?  My Mom has always been my mom and none of that other stuff.  I don't know because I wasn't there, but my guess would be pretty bossy.  They say she used to be nice.

If you could change one thing about your Mom, what would it be?  She has this weird thing about me keeping my room clean. I'd get rid of that.  I'd make my Mom smarter. Then she would know it was my sister who did it and not me.  I would like for her to get rid of those invisible eyes on the back of her head.

Is anything perfect about your mom?  Her teeth are perfect, but she bought them from the dentist.  Her casserole recipes. But we hate them.  Just her children.

We hope your Mother’s Day is filled with laughter and love. When you have a chance, call us, and we’ll share our perspective on investing through tough times.
