Pepperwood Foundation Environmental Studies Grant (PFG) Guidelines and Review Procedure Purpose:

The purpose of the PFG is to provide financial support for projects of educational and instructional merit in environmental studies utilizing the Pepperwood Preserve. The Pepperwood Preserve is a 3100 acre nature preserve owned by the Pepperwood Foundation. The instructional program is administered by the Pepperwood Education Director in cooperation with Santa Rosa Junior College.

The PFG award is to be used to develop an environmental curriculum component for an existing or new course or program utilizing the facilities of the Pepperwood Preserve. Examples might include: landscape painting, environmental writing, field laboratory exercise, a new short course, etc. This award is intended to provide financial support so that the recipient can become familiar with the preserve and thereby develop curriculum which will incorporate the preserve in some way.

Eligibility:

Santa Rosa Junior College faculty with three or more years of full time service to the district are eligible to apply. New faculty who have been approved at the March meeting of the Board of Trustees for a third year contract will also qualify for application and award.

Amount of Grant:

Each PFG award will be for a maximum of $2500.00, the total amount determined by the amount requested and the scope of the proposed project. The number of grants can vary from year to year depending on the success of previous awards and the number of applicants.

Application:

Announcements and requests for applications will be made by the Pepperwood Educational Advisory Committee early in the Spring semester of each academic year. Completed applications must be received by the committee by 12 noon on the date provided in the initial announcement. Each applicant is asked to provide an electronic file and/or one hard copy of the completed application to the committee. Include the following:

A. Completed application cover sheet. B. A general plan for the proposed project, including the following:  Brief statement (one paragraph) which gives an overview of the proposed project.  Project timeline.  Proposed budget, including resources and time required.  Detailed project description with expected outcomes.  Expected benefits of the project to the curriculum, professional effectiveness of the faculty member, students, Pepperwood Preserve and academic or occupational discipline. Review and Ranking Process:

Proposals will be reviewed by the Pepperwood Educational Advisory Committee. Recommendations for awards will be announced to the SRJC Academic community by the advisory committee. While there is no limit to the number of times a faculty member may apply or to the number of awards a faculty member may receive, preference will be given to those individuals who have not received recent support through this grant program.

The committee will rank proposals according to the following criteria:

 The application includes a clear general description of the proposed project, including how its curriculum effectiveness will be evaluated.  The project will enhance the faulty member’s professional effectiveness as a person and instructor at SRJC.  The educational program at SRJC will benefit from this project. Specifically, how the students will benefit from this project.  The Pepperwood Preserve will benefit from this project.  The project will contribute to the profession, discipline, area or occupation in which it is carried out.

When projects are given equal rank according to the above criteria, preference will be given to the faculty member who has not received a previous PFG.

The committee will not consider proposals turned in after the announced deadline.

Grant Dispersement:

Upon approval of the grant, the recipient will receive a check from the Pepperwood Foundation for one-half of the total award. The other half will be dispersed upon the receipt and approval of the Final Report.

Final Report:

Typically projects are to be of short duration and extend no longer than one year. Each recipient is required to provide a final report of the project’s results. The report should address how this project achieved the specific criteria and benefits that were proposed. That is, speak specifically to each of the expected benefits listed under “proposal ranking criteria.” Any recipient who does not submit a final report shall return all funds received.
