PASTORAL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES 5 May 2015 Lunch Room Parish School
Prior to the Pastoral Council meeting, individuals interested in serving on the Council were asked to attend, meet current Council members, and ask questions regarding Council service.
Fr. Brendan opened with a prayer, Kim Thress asked all current members, guests and those interested in council service introduce themselves. A discussion followed led by existing members regarding council service and their experiences on the Council. Those interested followed with questions and comments.
The guests were then excused.
Kim Thress called the meeting to order at 7:30PM
The minutes of the Council’s April 7, 2015 meeting were reviewed and approved as submitted.
Al De Grassi shared a prayer centered on the Holy Spirit that was followed by reflections by Council members
Pastor’s Comments: Fr. Brendan updated the Council on the final stages of the renovations, there is still final work to be completed on the baptismal font, and one of the glass pieces of the reredos broke upon installation and has delayed completion. The outdoor restrooms adjacent to the church would be renovated over the summer.
Bishop Vann will be visiting the parish on May 23rd for the anniversary of the Junipero Serra Club, and again on June 14th to bless the reredo. He will visit again on July 12 for Fr. Brendan’s installation as pastor.
Fr. Brendan then turned his comments to our Social Justice programs, one program has resulted in the service of 93,000 meals from St. Edward Parish Hall, he also mentioned a recent parish trip to Mexico in conjunction with the long standing Orange County organization Corazon, where volunteers cross the border and build small shelters for homeless families in neighborhoods in Tijuana.
He noted that $13,000 had been raised for victims of the tragic earthquake in Nepal.
Father Brendan reported that four of five Masses during which First Communion was celebrated had been held, and that the Sacrament of Confirmation was celebrated at Masses the previous two Sundays.
The Parish School has begun a new Strategic Planning process.
PC Minutes May 5 2015 Deacon Victor, whose ministry has been predominantly to the San Felipe de Jesus community, will be retiring.
Fr. Rudy Preciado, a long time Diocese of Orange priest, will be retiring and will be in residence at St. Edward. He indicated the desire to continue his ministry as needs in the parish may arise.
Fr. Brendan expressed hope that the lawsuit would be resolved soon.
The Pastoral Services Appeal goal for the parish is $234,000; to date $100,000 has been raised. Strategies and tactics to increase fundraising for this program were discussed.
Fr. Achilles is returning this summer to St. Edwards
Fr. Brendan has convened an Art Committee to discuss aesthetic additions to the sanctuary.
Sr. Sue Dunning is now a full time employee of the parish.
Outreach Ministry: Deacon Al Scaduto reported on a new committee being formed that would coordinate the various outreach ministries in the parish and would provide bridges to efforts in the community.
Fr. Brendan discussed the needs of the council going forward, as four of the current members will be cycling off per the council By Laws. Council members provided input to Fr. Brendan, who would be notifying those ultimately selected for service shortly.
The regularly scheduled June 2, 2015 meeting was cancelled, as Fr. Brendan will be on vacation at that time. It was also decided to reschedule the July 7, 2015 meeting to July 21, 2015.
Council members were polled on any roundtable items, and there was no further discussion.
Al De Grassi led the council in a closing prayer in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe that was inspired by the Cinco de Mayo holiday
