For HOW BIG? A Lesson in Measurement Vocabulary List
Volume = measure of the interior of a three dimensional figure. Expressed in cubic units. Mass = the amount of matter in an object. Expressed in pounds and kilograms. Length = a number that tells how many units there are in a segment. Expressed in linear units. Graduate container = container with lines for liquid measurement. Radius = the distance from the center of a circle to any point on that circle. Diameter = a line segment with endpoints on the circle that passed through the center of the circle (2 times the radius) Circumference = the distance around a circle Estimate = an educated guess Extrapolate = predicting values outside the given facts of the graph Interpolate = predicting values between two points on a graph Conversion = changing Metric to English units or visa versa Scale = instrument used to weigh objects

FORMULAS Volume of rectangular solid: l x w x h = v Volume of a cylinder: π x r 2 x h = v Area of a Triangle = ½ b h
Neat Fact:
2 In the Metric system, the three types of measurement are related. If you made a cube that measured one centimeter and filled it with water, the amount it would hold is one milliliter. Then, if you massed that cube of water, it would equal one gram.
1cc = 1ml = 1g cl = centiliter
3 Station #1 Student Worksheet Name______
Volume
Objective: Student will measure, convert and apply knowledge of measurement to health context. Student will demonstrate the proper and accurate use of measurement instruments.
Instructions: 1. Transfer fluid from urinal to calibrated container.
2. Record amount in ml ______.
3. Record amount in cc ______.
4. Using the conversion chart, change the fluid amount from ml to oz (show work)
5. Why would this information be of value to the nurse or doctor? Hint: Urine output less than 30 cc per hour is considered abnormal.
______
4 Station #2 Student Worksheet Name______
Length
Objective: Student will measure length, width, and circumference; convert; and apply knowledge of measurement to health context. Student will demonstrate proper and accurate use of measurement instruments.
Instructions: 1. Measure partner’s length (height) using the balance scale. Record length in inches ______.
2. Measure partner’s head circumference, just above the ears, using the tape measure. Record circumference in inches ______.
3. Measure partner’s calf in inches for knee high TED hose (support hose) - length (bottom of heel to bend of knee)______- circumference (widest part of calf) ______
4. Using the conversion chart, change the inches to cm for all the above answers. Show work.
5 Station #3 Student Worksheet Name______
Mass
Objective: Student will measure mass of a given solid object, convert, and apply knowledge of measurement to health context. Student will demonstrate the proper and accurate use of measurement instruments.
Instructions: 1. Complete the following. Show work.
2. Use the clinical scale to weigh your partner in pounds______
Convert to kg.______
3. Use small scale to measure smaller item in ounces.
Convert to gm.______
6 Problem Sheet Name______
1. Length: A heart attack patient starts an exercise program. The first day he walks 0.5 km. Each day he increases his distance by 500 m.
a. How far did he walk on the 7th day?
b. How many kilometers does he walk in 1 week?
2. Weight: Gilliam weighs 53.4 kg. How many pounds does Gilliam weigh?
3. Volume: A prepared enema contains 6 ounces of solution. How many ml of solution are in the enema?
4. Length: Tyrone is decorating the hospital room. He puts up a rectangular chart board measuring 72 cm by 56 cm. What is the largest area of a triangle Tyrone can make out of this chart board if the triangle can not be made of more than one piece of board?
