Wednesday 23rd May 2012: Condé Nast Traveller is delighted to announce the winners of its sixth annual Innovation and Design Awards, held in association with JW Marriott at a special ceremony at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, hosted by the Editor Sarah Miller.

SUSTAINABILITY Joint winners, Vivienne Westwood for her fundraising campaign Cool Earth – No Fun Being Extinct which engages with indigenous communities to invest in forestry management schemes; together with Helen Storey MBE and Tony Ryan OBE for Catalytic Clothing – a radical concept which endeavors to purify the air we breathe through the surface of our clothes. Presented by Christina Robert, Founder of Bright Green Pictures and freelance journalist.

CULTURE British - based architect David Adjaye won this award for Genesis Pavillion, Miami; a temporary triangular structure of timber blocks, punctured by a central hollow which allowed visitors to see framed views of the surroundings and sky. An honourable mention was also given to ‘Perspectives’ for Swarovski Crystal Palace, St Paul’s Cathedral, London. Presented by Sebastian Conran, acclaimed industrial designer and head of Sebastian Conran Associates.

COMMUNICATION & TECHNOLOGY The iPad 2, Apple’s 8.8mm-thick tablet and the latest iPhone 4S jointly won in this category with the award collected by Adam Howorth on behalf of Sir Jonathan Ive. The iPad 2 is thinner and lighter than the original and now includes two cameras, whilst the iPhone 4S includes a camera with HD resolution video recording and Siri, an intelligent assistant. Samsung Galaxy SII phone was also given an honourable mention. Presented by Brent Hoberman, co-founder of Lastminute.com and chairman of Made.com.

GOURMET Joint winners Australian Bill Granger for Granger & co, this casual all-day dining space based on Bill’s café in Sydney but with more Asian dishes on the menu; and the Delaunay, the new hugely successful sister to the Wolseley, presented to Jeremy King. Presented by Loyd Grossman, renowned food lover, chairman of the Churches Conservation Trust and chairman of the Heritage Alliance.

LEISURE Living Architecture’s temporary building A Room for London, Southbank created to celebrate the Olympic year, won in this category. Alain de Botton collected the award for this one-bedroom boat perched on the edge of the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Southbank centre which was designed by David Kohn Architects in collaboration with Fiona Banner. Presented by Justin McGuirk Design Critic for the Guardian and publishing director of the Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow.

INFRASTRUCTURE Presented to Mike Taylor and Chris Bannister at Hopkins Architects for the London 2012 Velodrome. This elegant structure stands towards the northern end of the Olympic site and was designed to ‘cling’ as closely as possible to the track. It is set on a slight mound with a Pringle – crisp shaped roof atop its cedar façade. Presented by Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Shadow Minister for London; Shadow Minister for the Olympics.

STYLE ON THE MOVE Designed by award winning duo Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the London 2012 Olympic Torch won in this category. The 800g laser-cut, gold coloured aluminum torch has 8,000 perforations, representing the 8,000 people who will carry it on its 70-day journey around the UK. Presented by Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Shadow Minister for London; Shadow Minister for the Olympics.

TRANSPORT Joint winners Ferrari Tailor – Made, the first bepoke service for Ferrari clients who want to design the look of their own car; and Fiat 500 by Gucci; a special edition of the iconic Fiat 500, originated by Lapo Elkann and designed by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini in collaboration with Fiat’s Centro Stile. Both awards were collected by Lapo Elkann. Presented by Paul Thompson, Rector of the Royal College of Art.

AVIATION Passing Cloud, by New York architect Tiago Barros, is a design created from strong yet flexible inflatable balloons and - were it to be built – would be powered by predominant winds, so the journey with no fixed arrival or destination becomes the point. Passengers would sit on the balloons but because they are moving with the wind wouldn’t get blown about. Hong Kong Airlines All Club Class Jet daily service to London was also given an honourable mention. Presented by Andrew Nahum, Senior Curator at London’s Science Museum and author.

RETAIL Christian Louboutin collected this award for Christian Louboutin men’s boutique, Paris; his first men’s shoe shop designed by Eric Clough, with studded leather floors and embroided leather walls. Thomas Heatherwick at Pacific Place, Hong Kong and Ilse Crawford at Sergio Rossi,Rome were also given honourable mentions. Presented by India Hicks, model, designer and author.

HOTEL OF THE FUTURE All four designers commissioned by Conde Nast Traveller magazine; Daniel Weil of Pentagram Design, Ab Rogers Design, Bill Amberg and ReardonSmith Architects are recognized for their outstanding concepts. The Way you Sleep by Daniel Weil will enable you to link your hotel experience with the way you sleep at home, adding a new dimension to your hotel comfort; Shower by Ab Rogers Design is a circular, translucent glazed expressed shower that allows you to have a refreshing shower whilst bathed in sunlight; Bill Amberg’s space saving desk Writing Desk, combines the busy traveller’s need for a simple table and work station in their hotel room; whilst Pedro by ReardonSmith Architects converts windowless bedrooms into the setting of your choice with video images, sounds and scents. Presented by Mitzi Gaskins, VP & Global Brand Manager, JW Marriott Hotels & Resorts at Marriott International. About Condé Nast Traveller Design & Innovation Awards: An expert panel of judges compiled a shortlist of outstanding recent designs across the ten categories which were revealed in a special supplement with the May 2012 issue of Condé Nast Traveller and online at www.cntraveller.com. The magazine’s global readership was then invited to vote for its choice of winner online. This year Condé Nast Traveller also asked four leading designers to come up with a concept which would make the experience of staying in a hotel better by design, for the new Hotel of the Future Award.
