The celebration began with Vespers and Confes- sions on Friday evening. Bishop Mitrophan celebrated the Divine Liturgy on Saturday, assisted by the local priest Fr. Rastko Trbuhovich and three priests from neighboring Orthodox Churches: Fr. Thomas Kadlec, St. Maryʼs Carpatho Rus- sian Church; Fr. Christos Chris- takis of the Annunciation Greek Church and Fr. Peter Jackson of the St. Theodore ROCOR Church. Also assisting were Deacon Milan Medakovich, a son of the St. Ste- phen parish, and Deacon Dragoslav Kosic from the Eastern Diocese. A New History of the Carillon
A New History of the Carillon TIFFANY K. NG Rombouts, Luc. Singing Bronze: A History of Carillon Music. Translated by Com- municationwise. Leuven: Leuven University Press, 2014, 368 pp. HE CARILLON IS HIDDEN IN plain sight: the instrument and its players cannot be found performing in concert halls, yet while carillonneurs and Tkeyboards are invisible, their towers provide a musical soundscape and focal point for over six hundred cities, neighborhoods, campuses, and parks in Europe, North America, and beyond. The carillon, a keyboard instrument of at least two octaves of precisely tuned bronze bells, played from a mechanical- action keyboard and pedalboard, and usually concealed in a tower, has not received a comprehensive historical treatment since André Lehr’s The Art of the Carillon in the Low Countries (1991). A Dutch bellfounder and campanologist, Lehr contributed a positivist history that was far-ranging and thorough. In 1998, Alain Corbin’s important study Village Bells: Sound and Meaning in the Nineteenth-Century French Countryside (translated from the 1994 French original) approached the broader field of campanology as a history of the senses.1 Belgian carillonneur and musicologist Luc Rombouts has now compiled his extensive knowledge of carillon history in the Netherlands, Belgium, and the United States, as well as of less visible carillon cultures from Curaçao to Japan, into Singing Bronze: A History of Carillon Music, the most valuable scholarly account of the instrument to date. Rombouts’s original Dutch book, Zingend Brons (Leuven: Davidsfonds, 2010), is the more comprehensive version of the two, directed at a general readership in the Low Countries familiar with carillon music, and at carillonneurs and music scholars. -

Editor’s introduction: ex umbris Neil Croally Summer 2020 Torn between the war against cliché and the rhetoric of praeteritio In late March, purely for entertainment’s sake, I had recourse to the guilty pleasure of watching some episodes of Spooks.1 Soon this turned into an obsessive need to watch the episodes of all ten series. Yes, that is nearly 100 hours of television – for someone who does not own a television. But what was the attraction? At first, I merely indulged a love for representations of the secret world, however inane or fantastic. Co-incidentally and (I suppose) remarkably, there were the Dulwich connections: not only of two of the starring actors, Rupert Penry-Jones and Raza Jaffrey, but also of the use of Sydenham Hill station and the nearby woods as the site of a secret assignation away from the febrile atmosphere of the ‘grid’, and of Crystal Palace Sports Centre as the place where a jihadi cell met under cover of a weekly five-a-side knockabout. But moving through the series, I began to marvel at two apparently incompatible features of the show. The first was the wish, unsurprising in a series about the security services, to dive boldly into ethical dilemmas, more specifically into an examination of Utilitarianism.2 One can only admire the direct, no-nonsense way in which centuries of philosophical reflection are cast aside, as the spies come down without fail in favour of the majoritarian position, whatever the cost to individuals and to themselves. -

It is at this time that icons, making the invisible visible and thus directly accessible to all, appear to have acquired particular prominence as objects of private and communal devotion.1 This rising prominence is reflected, for instance, in the miniatures of the Constan- tinopolitan Theodore Psalter, dated to 1066, where numerous biblical and saintly figu es are actually shown praying to icons of Christ, placed as a rule above them.2 1. -

Public discussion on the impact of Orthodox liturgy seems, indeed, to focus in the twenty-first century on the experience of the individual, instead of the twentieth-century emphasis on communal eucharistic ecclesiology.3 This shift in scholarly attempts to understand the 1 This paper, originally performed (!) at the biennial conference of the International Society for Orthodox Church Music in Joensuu, Finland, in June 2019, is a part of a more extensive project that has already resulted in some papers on this topic. Following its occupation by the Soviet Union at the conclusion of the Second World War, Estonia was incorporated as a Soviet Socialist Republic and subjected to the same strident anti-religious Marxism as the rest of the USSR. Furthermore, restrictions were placed on composers regarding the publication and performance of sacred music, and use of twentieth-century compositional techniques that were widely known in Western Europe and the United States. Labeled “formalism,” the use of serialism, aleatory and collage techniques was forbidden throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, just as Pärt was emerging as a composer. Though the latter part of the 1960s saw a loosening of these restrictions throughout the Soviet Union, Pärt’s 1968 Credo brought official condemnation and a ban on its performance by Soviet authorities. During the eight years that followed, Arvo Pärt undertook a study of medieval and early Renaissance music that culminated in the development of his tintinnabuli style of composition. -

In general, this Typikon represents a distillation of a number of local Russian bell-ringing traditions and was brought forth as part of the Russian church’s ongoing effort to revive and to re-propagate the knowledge which had nearly been lost during the Communist Era. The Patriarchate planned this edition as a preliminary effort, which was to be circulated, reviewed, and revised in the light of experienced zvonars’ comments after a year or two. Hence, its translation is provisional as well. When the revised edition is published in Moscow, we hope then to revise our translation and have it printed for distribution; or Moscow may bring forth an English edition of their own, which we will make available. Sisto 2013 The Soul of The Human Race: The Mother of God In The Theology of Sergius Bulgakov Walter Nunzio Sisto Doctor of Philosophy University of St. Michael’s College 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines the role of the Mother of God in Sergius Bulgakov’s Sophiology. It places Bulgakov’s Mariology within the contexts of the Russian Religious Renaissance and Russian Sophiology. With respect to Russian Sophiology, Bulgakov systematically develops the insights on Mary proffered by Vladimir Solov’ev and Pavel Florensky. I demonstrate that his The Burning Bush (1926) should be seen as the fullest development of Sophianic Mariology initiated by Solov’ev. The influence of the Russian Religious Renaissance is evident in his emphasis on sexuality. Bulgakov incorporates the popular theory from this movement that each person consists of a “spiritual bisexuality” into his Mariology. Like many of his peers, Bulgakov was an essentialist who interprets the human experience in terms of sexuality. Within this anthropological vision, Mary has a unique importance because she is the fullest manifestation of the feminine potential in humankind. I argue that the pneumatological context of his Mariology reveals the liberating and inclusive role of the feminine.
