LEARNING RESOURCES: When you register for a course, you take on a big responsibility. If you want to complete this class successfully, below are some of the things I expect you take responsibility for. a. Come to class every day. Each class builds on the preceding ones. Gaps in your knowledge can be detrimental. b. Be on time. Stragglers are very disruptive. It also wastes your money. If you have to leave early, please sit at the back of the class and close to the door. c. Do the assigned homework. You cannot learn math without doing math. The more you practice, the better you get. Be prepared to spend an average of 2 hours a day outside class. Try to get help as soon as possible. The Math tutoring lab (SAM 100) is a good place to get additional help. The Student Assistance Center (Be1106) is another place to get free tutoring. Sign up early. d. Come to my office hours whenever you need extra help. This is especially important since we only have 50 minutes a day and it will feel that I am going thru some topics very quickly. I can give you one-on-one help in my office. e. Get to know at least one of your classmates. If you miss a class, call a classmate to get the notes and assignment. Get together with other classmates to work on problems you are having difficulty. A quiet lounge is a good place to study together. f. Read the syllabus thoroughly and keep a file of all your returned work. g. Check our class website (http://seattlecentral.org/faculty/feltiu) regularly. This is where I post the due dates for homework and sections covered in class. Let me know as soon as possible if you see any errors in your posted scores. 6. FEEDBACK AND EVALUATION: A 30-minute group quiz worth 20 points will be given every Friday during the week with no chapter exams. Homework problems will be randomly selected and corrected. Homework is worth 20 points each. There will be four 50-minute chapter exams (individual) given during the quarter. Final exam will be comprehensive and will cover all materials. There are NO MAKE-UPS FOR QUIZZES OR CHAPTER EXAMS. LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. If you know that you will be gone, you can turn in homework or take exams ahead of time. Two homework, three class works and one quiz will be dropped by the end of the quarter. If you miss any exams, the first one will be replaced by your final exam (appropriately scaled). The second missed exam will be replaced by 80% of your final exam (appropriately scaled). The third missed exam will be replaced by 70% of your final exam (appropriately scaled). The fourth missed exam will be given a zero. If you take all exams, your lowest exam score will be replaced by your final exam, if your final exam (appropriately scaled) is higher. Otherwise, it stays as is. Grading Policy: Grades will be based on the following: Homework 15% Class work 5% Quizzes 10% Group Project 10% Chapter Exams 40% Final Exam 20% The average percentage from above will have the following numerical & letter grades: (example: 2.2 = 77%; 2.5 = 80%; 3.0 = 85%, 3.5=90%) 95 - 100 4.0 A+ 90 - 94 3.5-3.9 A 80 - 89 2.5-3.4 B 65 - 79 1.5-2.4 C (2.0 = 74%, for M85) 55 - 64 0.7-1.4 D below 55 0.0 F For other non-traditional grading options, check course catalog for requirements. Disclaimer: I reserve the right to make changes to this syllabus during the quarter provided it is done so in writing or on the class web site and is made available to students with reasonable advanced notice.

Here are some tips to be successful in my Math 84: 1. Tutors: a. Math Lab (SAM 100)  It’s helpful for drop-in or short questions only.  You can do your homework there and ask the tutors right away if stuck. (less frustrating than getting stuck with the problem at home) b. Student Tutoring Center  Located above the convenience store on the ground floor of the main brick BE building. (go up the staircase next to the store)  It’s good for longer time and one-on-one help.  Need to sign up a week ahead.  If you need help longer than one hour or at a different time not listed on the schedule, talk to someone in Room 1106 (Student Assistance Center). They might be able to help you. c. Math 84 Supplemental Help  Days and rooms will be announced later  Tutors are helping out Math 84 students only.  Get to meet other Math 84 students. 2. Study Buddy.  Find a few fellow students in class to study with you.  Find someone you think will be a good match with you.  Form a relationship with this person that allows 3AM phone calls. 3. Know your instructor.  Establish a relationship.  Sit in the front of the class.  Pay attention. Participate.  Convey to me “I got it” and “I don’t get it”.  Make an appointment right away if you feel you are starting to get behind. 4. Class website and other resources  Check our class website (http://seattlecentral.org/faculty/feltiu) for homework deadlines and lecture notes for the day.  Talk to a librarian to see if there are video tapes or cd for the class at the library. Look for the one that’s titled “Introductory Algebra for College Students” by Robert Blitzer.  It’s helpful if you miss class or want different explanations.

Establish routines early in the quarter. You need to find tutors that will fit your learning style. Find a nice, quiet place and times every day to do your math. Don’t freak out. Don’t hesitate. Be assertive about your learning. 2.0 or 74% average to go to Math 85. SYLLABUS AGREEMENT Class: ______Class time:______
