Session title Child Welfare Agencies and Schools Merging Together: On the Road to Academic Success!

Session description An overview of Catawba County's experience with developing, implementing, and providing services aimed to improve academic performance for children in foster care. Hear first hand from the child welfare agency and school district office about collaborating between the two agencies and how it looks day to day. We'll discuss fostering connections, risk factors that contribute to poor academic outcomes, and the process in place for information sharing between the two entities. Participants will leave with realistic ways/ideas to better address the educational needs of children who have experienced foster care.

Objective/Goal #1 Participants will discover strategies to engage and partner with their local child welfare agency. Objective/Goal #2 Participants will learn ways to better support children in foster care. Objective/Goal #3 Participants will be able to identify the risk factors that contribute to poor academic outcomes for children who have experienced foster care.

To address the child welfare component: A powerful video (12 minutes)about the life of a child in foster care will be shown prior to the presentation. Then, a power point presentation (and discussion) about the relationship between Catawba County Social Services (Child Welfare Agency) and the local school district office will occur. The presentation will cover the history and how the collaborative program came to exist, and how it looks/functions presently. Candid (non-scripted) conversation between the child welfare agency and school district office will take place. There will be time provided for questions from the audience. To address program development: We will offer realistic steps/ways to begin effectively collaborating with child welfare agencies. Examples of tangible resources (Educational Passports, School Track Sheets for children in Foster Care, Foster Care Liaison Training Packet) will be given.

How does this session contribute to the advancement, extension and enhancement of the professional... This session will improve the participants knowledge of issues that children in foster care face. It will assist in relationship building/collaboration on a macro level. Provides knowledge and helpful tools for addressing educational needs of children in foster care that can be utilized when working with classroom teachers, administrators and individual students.

Provide your presenter Resume/CV or biography. Adrienne Overby has been the full-time Educational Advocate at Catawba County Social Services since 2009. In this capacity she serves as a liaison with three public school systems in our county as well as systems in neighboring counties and our child welfare services. Prior to this position, she worked several years as a foster care worker with Catawba County. She has her BSW from UNC- Wilmington.
