Purpose This unit standard is for experienced people working in the glazing industry.

People credited with this unit standard are able to prepare to install and install splashbacks and mirrors.

Explanatory notes

1 Definitions Worksite requirements – refer to instructions to staff on policy and procedures which are documented in memo or manual format and are available in the workplace. These requirements include – company specifications and procedures, work instructions, manufacturer’s specifications, product quality specifications, legislative requirements. Splashbacks – splashbacks, glass wall cladding.

2 Legislation and standards relevant to this unit standard include – Building Act 2004, Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992, New Zealand Standard (NZS) 4223.3:1999 Glazing in buildings - Human impact safety requirements, available at http://www.standards.co.nz.

3 Range Evidence is required of two splashbacks and two mirrors.

Outcomes and evidence requirements

Outcome 1

Prepare to install splashbacks and mirrors.

Evidence requirements

1.1 Customer's requirements are confirmed before work begins in accordance with worksite requirements.

Range requirements include – work required, fixing method, material and quantities required, location of job, site accessibility, location of services.

1.2 Splashbacks and mirrors for installation are checked for faults before work commences in accordance with worksite requirements.

Range faults include – scratches, silver faults, edge damage, glass faults, edge seal damage.

1.3 All necessary equipment, tools, and installation materials are checked and assembled before work begins in accordance with worksite requirements.

1.4 Installation plan is prepared in accordance with the job specifications and customer and worksite requirements.

Outcome 2

Install splashbacks and mirrors.

Evidence requirements

2.1 Hidden services are located before installation in accordance with worksite requirements.

Range services include – electrical, plumbing.

2.2 Wall is checked for flatness and squareness in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.3 Adhesives selected are compatible with splashback or mirror backing and mounting surface and are used in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.4 Methods for fixing splashbacks and mirrors to walls are described in accordance with the job specifications and worksite requirements.

Range methods include – adhesive, screws, tape, metal channelling, mounts, frames, mirror pads, cutting on site.

2.5 Splashbacks and mirrors are fixed to wall and installation is square, plumb, and secure in accordance with the job specifications and worksite requirements.

2.6 Drainage and/or freely ventilated airspace between the splashback or mirror and wall is provided to meet the job specifications and worksite requirements.

2.7 Operations are completed without injury to personnel or damage to products and equipment in accordance with the job specifications and worksite requirements.

2.8 Installation is cleaned and work area is clear and cleaned in accordance with worksite requirements.

2.9 Customer is advised of any relevant maintenance requirements in accordance with worksite requirements.
