Topic Discussion

Updates  9 representatives from Tarleton are attending the TAMU Green Dot Institute June 6-9  Web services has created the new SAVP website. There is little content at this time because much of it still needs to be developed. It is the plan of the SAVP office to develop some in-house, to link to appropriate resources, and to work with student groups ongoing to develop / update content as-needed.  EverFi provided an updated SADI report based on our feedback from the initial report. There is far more detail and context in the new report, which has been emailed to the group.  Cindy McCarthy reported there are now 3 trained SANE nurses for Erath County.

Planning  Caris developed 5 broad goals for the Task Force SP based on prior meetings, research, and best-practice. The group will focus on the first 3 prevention-related goals today.  A handout was provided listing the 5 goals, with some background information and prompts for consideration. The group divided into three small groups and engaged in discussion / brainstorming about the first 3 goals, noted below:

Goal 1: Expand appropriate prevention education  Include pamphlets in HR for new-hires  Develop CE programs for nurses, EMS, LE w/ regard to IPV  Look for additional partners: women’s health, community health, choices, add an umbrella under SART?  Cross-training between TSU and community orgs to assist w/ data collection o Create standardized data collection for community partners  Consider what other members could be added to SART  Is there a way to develop a model like the Child Advocacy Center model for adults, with a single forensic interview, ideally in the same location as the forensic exam, and possibly in the same location as victim services?  Add ROTC, band, corps, athletes, non-traditional, grad students to training – specific to each group  Address family norms / values  Develop programming for men  April event combined w/ TSU, community, SISD, maybe in conjunction w/ service day or roundup  Training for Tarleton Parent’s Association  Develop a marketing campaign  Provide training / edu for academic employees, be sure to include adjuncts, beyond the required online training.  Specialized training to specific groups: LGBTQ, transfer, minority students, and info to local ISDs  Training / education w/ older students who serve in mentoring roles. They benefit and can also influence younger students.  Develop and offer a class that could be an elective for a number of different majors. Completing would allow the students to be certified as peer educators and / or peer advocates.  Complete an inventory of all areas to see what they are doing as far as training (i.e. athletics, greek, RL&L, HR, etc)

Goal 2: Promote a clear and consistent message  Develop Grab & Go content for website, available to TSU and surrounding areas  Collaborate w/ local ISDs to develop a consistent message / curriculum pre-k on up  Provide training for HS teachers who teach subjects that overlap with this area  Keep a community task force / committee in place that provides a way for different stakeholders to communicate about what they are dealing with, how to address it.  Climate survey with community?  Short articles to post on website and in The Flash, ECBN, and Empire Tribune. Might be written by a number of people involved in this work, but consider whose name or what group they should come from – Dottavio? The Task Force?  Students could write an op/ed or news article on the topic as an assignment, and we select one or more to share with media outlets  Make sure programming is consistent with Campus Clarity  Disseminate info to all campuses  Provide training to transfer students  Provide training to faculty regarding the best language to use in class / syllabus. Be sure to include adjuncts.  Send TSU rep to community events  Expand ROTC charter to greater community  Mandate training for different groups, include student leaders (TTM, RL, SGA Pres. &VPres., alumni ambassadors, Plowboys, Poo, Texan Rider, etc) in addition to student groups  Hire a GA to manage wellness marketing, including messaging about sexual violence, IPV, stalking, harassment, etc.  Talk to parents at orientation when they are not with their students. Focus on safety, and keep it “digestible.” Maybe 5 warning signs your student is struggling, and how to help. Focus on safety, well-being versus explicitly sexual assault.  Create / develop a prevention program that incorporates community partners and create a master partner list  Create online (series) training to mandate participation through HR  Educate welcome center and tour guides about sexual assault / resources

Goal 3: Engage in assessment and tracking  Pre and post presentation assessment of participant knowledge / perspectives  Track unreported incidents and type of incident  How does TSU compare to other institutions in terms of incidents?  Central reporting to track training across all organizations o Do we know who is providing / participating in training, how often, and what the content is?  Separate training into specific areas so it can be tracked better (intimate partner violence, etc.)  Publicizing campus clarity data  Collecting data on utilization of services and creating committee to then review data & develop / implement better education and services  Can TSU be included into SA protocol?  Establish learning outcomes measuring those in the community based education (qualitative questions)  Measure community climate about SA / IPV, follow-up with focus groups to discuss perceptions (how to get people to participate? Incentives, etc?)  How do we engage community business partnerships? (Have a consolidated list)  Look at engaging chamber  Database for calendar for TSU / community to submit training opportunities  Survey grand juries at the conclusion of their service to give us an idea of the attitudes / beliefs of the people who are making indictment decisions  When gathering info from students, don’t ask what students do / don’t do. Ask, “How many of your friends do ____? Most of them, some of them, almost none of them,” etc.  Include open-ended questions like, “are there places where you feel unsafe? If so, would you please tell us why?”  Incorporate questions into presentations  Work with RL&L to do focus groups  Consider collaborating with Student Engagement to use OrgSync for tracking student participation o Is there a way to have admin access to see how many students have done a particular training or to see what specific things a particular student participated in?

Wrap Up  Next meeting will focus on the final two goals, which are response-oriented  Caris will send out typed notes from the meeting for feedback / additional input from participants.
