TAPE ME IN YOUR SKETCHBOOK!! Sketchbook Check Instructions

The purpose of a sketchbook is to make you look harder at things, use your imagination, and explore ideas and techniques that interest, challenge, and stimulate you. You will find that practice does indeed pay off and your confidence in your abilities will increase due to the amount of effort and care you put into your work. This is your place to experiment and grow. Remember- you're only limited by your own imagination. Sketchbooks are an amazing opportunity to draw, visualize, write, thumbnail, or fill countless hours doodling and relaxing. Consider using your sketchbook as an extension of your personality as well as continuing to improve your artistic skills. Remember, your sketchbook is a tool to better yourself and not viewed solely as a grade, so please take advantage of these Sketchbook assignments!

 For every Sketchbook Check, you should have 4 observational drawings. Each drawing should take at least 30 - 45 minutes to do. An observational drawing is drawing something that you actually see, not something fantasy or imagined in your head. While I enjoy seeing your imagination and talent flourish with fantasy and cartoon drawings, they DO NOT COUNT as entries for Sketchbook Checks.  Each drawing should fill up an entire page in your sketchbook.  Full shading/using value is expected, as are details. Use of colored pencils or other materials like pen and ink or your own favorite materials are OK to use, but value/shading MUST be present in each drawing.  If you draw something you see in a magazine or on the Internet, you MUST print it out and tape it in your sketchbook.  Sketches and exercise that we do in class DO NOT count as observational drawings.  Label each sketch with the date, the amount of time it took you to complete, and the number. EXAMPLE: “Trees” 9/10/15 Observational drawing #1 (45 mins)
