DECLARATION OF GIFT AND GUIDELINES FOR THE SAM and BONNIE McNEELY STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP

HISTORY

The Sam and Bonnie McNeely Study Abroad Scholarship was established through a generous gift from Mr. Sam McNeely and Dr. Bonnie McNeely.

The McNeelys have been faculty members of the College of Business and Public Affairs at Murray State University since 1987. Sam received his B.S. degree in Biology from Davidson College in 1970 and his M.B.A. degree from Murray State University in 1978. In addition, he has completed further Ph.D.-level course work in marketing at the University of South Carolina. Bonnie received her B.S. degree in Home Economics from the University of Kentucky in 1972, her M.S. in Human Development and Family Relations from UK in 1974, her M.B.A. from Murray State University in 1980, and her Ph.D. in Management from the University of South Carolina in 1991.

In 1968, as a 19-year old undergraduate at Davidson College, Sam first experienced the many benefits of a student study abroad program while studying German at a Goethe Institute near Munich. This early appreciation of other countries and cultures has guided his life-long pursuit of international travel. Over the years, the McNeelys have visited nearly 35 countries with almost 20 pleasure and professional trips to Europe and other trips to Central and South America, Asia, and Africa.

While at MSU, the McNeelys have been very active in international programs. They have taught together in the Semester in Regensburg program (1994, 2000), Kentucky Institute for International Studies’ Bregenz, Austria program (1999), and Cooperative Center for Study Abroad (CCSA) program in London (2002). In addition, Bonnie has taught a graduate class in the Cyprus M.B.A. program (2005).

Sam is currently the MSU Representative for the International Business Seminars (IBS) program. IBS is a unique program designed especially for business students who visit the major business and cultural centers of Europe, observe first-hand the practices of multi-national corporations while interacting with high-level executives and touring the facilities. Both the McNeelys have served as Faculty Leaders on several of the IBS Winter and Summer seminars. In addition, Sam has served on several international committees at MSU.

Whereas Sam and Bonnie McNeely wish to assist MSU students in obtaining a study abroad experience and have made a generous donation to the Murray State University Foundation to establish an endowment for that purpose.
