PARAGRAPH 1: WHEREAS, THE LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM WON THE 2006 SOUTHEASTERN CONFERENCE (SEC) REGULAR SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1981, AND PARAGRAPH 2: WHEREAS, THE LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM, WAS AWARDED A FOURTH SEED IN THE ATLANTA REGIONAL IN THE NCAA MEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT, AND PARAGRAPH 3: WHEREAS, THE LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATED IONA AND TEXAS A & M, ADVANCING TO THE SWEET 16 FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 2000, AND PARAGRAPH 4: WHEREAS, THE LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATED OVERALL NUMBER 1 SEED AND NUMBER 1 RANKED DUKE TO ADVANCE TO THE ELITE 8, AND PARAGRAPH 5: WHEREAS, THE LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM DEFEATED NUMBER 2 SEED TEXAS, WINNING THE ATLANTA REGIONAL AND ADVANCING TO FINAL FOUR FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1986, AND PARAGRAPH 6: WHEREAS, THE LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM, COMPLETED A 27-9 RECORD, THE THIRD HIGHEST WINNING PERCENTAGE IN SCHOOL HISTORY, AND PARAGRAPH 7: WHEREAS, THE LSU MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM FINISHED THIRD IN THE ESPN/USA TODAY COACHES POLL, ITS HIGHEST POST TOURNAMENT RANKING SINCE 1981, AND PARAGRAPH 8: WHEREAS, HEAD COACH, JOHN BRADY WAS NAMED SEC COACH OF THE YEAR. Syracuse University Nels Popp, Ph.D. University of North Carolina Chapel Hill _________________________________________________________ Men’s head basketball coaches at NCAA Division I programs commonly earn hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars each year, and are commonly paid three or four times as much as their university presidents, yet these wages are currently not rigorously analyzed prior to making hiring choices. Regression modeling reveals that basketball program revenue predicts the vast majority of compensation levels, apart from lifetime successes in NCAA tournaments, each coach’s ratings percentage index (RPI), and lifetime winning percentage. Athletics directors therefore need a tool whereby intrinsic value of their head coaches can be assessed. This study remedies an identified gap in the literature by extending estimates of intrinsic valuation to coaches’ contracts, increasing labor market efficiency. Predicted salaries of contemporary coaches are compared to actual salaries, noting differences. GREENBERG* INTRODUCTION College coaches are some of the highest of profile employees at any college or university. In many instances the pay that they receive outdis- tances the pay of the university's chancellor or most esteemed professor. Their athletic accomplishments receive more notoriety and media atten- tion than the most celebrated lab discovery of the university's science department. For many coaches the job can be characterized as "24-7" due to the exponential growth in their responsibilities beyond con- ducting practices, teaching and coaching. And what a job - every coaching moment is surrounded by stress, and every decision, whether on or off the court, is subject to second-guessing and scrutiny and is the subject of an often vicious public debate. Moreover, a coach's job secur- ity is often conditioned on winning because wins are the equivalent of the bottom line, putting fans in the stands, bolstering alumni contribu- tions, warranting lucrative TV and cable contracts, and persuading re- cruits to accept scholarship offers.
