IPS HISTORY COMMITTEE REPORT 2010

I. Function of the Committee: The History Committee and the Historian have solicited and maintained materials relevant to the history of IPS. The compilation is known as the IPS Archives. An image file of digital images is proceeding slowly with the ultimate goal of having thumbnail and high resolution images available to IPS members and for IPS business purposes.

II. Committee Chair and Committee Members: John Hare, Chair and IPS Historian, Ash Enterprises International [email protected] Committee members: Loris Ramponi, Lumezanne, Italy [email protected] Jack Dunn, Lincoln, NE [email protected] Shoichi Itoh, National Astronomical Observatory, Tokyo, Japan [email protected] Don Knapp, Warminster, PA [email protected] De facto members: Ian McLennan, Vancouver, Canada [email protected] Thomas Kraupe, Hamburg, Germany Thomas.kraupe@planetarium- hamburg.de

III. Accomplishments of the Committee Paul Engle, first Historian and first President of IPS, began a compilation of materials that have become known as the IPS Archives. This compilation was passed on to the second IPS Historian, John Hare, and has continued to grow in size. The Archive is housed at the office of Ash Enterprises in Bradenton, Florida.

IV. Future Goals of the Committee • Enhance and expand the postings on the History pages on the IPS Website. Pictures of the past presidents should be available by the Council meeting.

• Update the History Committee information on the “Committees” section of the IPS Website.

• Work with Thomas Kraupe and Ian McLennan on the IPS deceased member s subcommittee. A database has been established and methods of

1 recognizing past, deceased members are being formulated.

• Finish the scanning of slides and photographs that has been ongoing for several years. The scanning project will be finished this summer. The images will be available to IPS members as thumbnails on a link from the IPS website. High resolution images can then be requested by members on a yet- to-be-established basis.

V. Budget Requirements No budget requirements exist at this point. Data storage is being furnished at no charge to IPS.

VI. Comments The iView application that was purchased several years ago has been rendered obsolete. The company was acquired by another and support was discontinued. Facebook has the ability to do what is required. I have recently upgraded my software to allow links from image files to a Facebook account. I will attempt to have some samples available in Egypt as to how this can be utilized for our purposes.

VII. Summary/Abstract The History Committee is responsible for the IPS Archives and the IPS Image File. The archives and image files are maintained by IPS Historian, John Hare at the Bradenton, Florida office of Ash Enterprises. Printed and visual materials of historical significance to IPS are included, and members are encouraged to contribute relevant items.
