How to access electronic journals
Introduction
This video explains how to access electronic journal articles whether you are on or off-campus, or using a laptop or other mobile device.
Accessing electronic journals via Cardiff Portal
When you want to use any of the journals, databases or eBooks which the University subscribes to online, it is essential that you access them via Cardiff Portal. These resources often require a username and password for access, especially when you are using a laptop or you’re working off-campus. When you access them using the Portal, you are automatically recognised as being a member of Cardiff University and so you will not usually be required to enter your username and password again.
Using the eLibrary
To access an electronic journal, click on Library and then choose eLibrary.
Enter the title of the journal, not the title of the journal article. In this example the title of the journal is Conservation Biology. In a reference, journal titles are usually written in italics or bold.
Select the title you need from the list of results
Then on this screen [eLibrary @ Cardiff] choose the option that covers the year in which the article you need was published. In this case we need 2008.
Using electronic journals Each eJournal page is different – on this one you need to click on “See All” to see older issues – this may be called Archive or Past Issues for other journals. Then look for the year, volume and issue number you need.
Most eJournals will have a PDF version but you might need to look out for an html or full text link if a PDF link is not available.
Look out for the options to print and save the article. Under copyright terms and conditions you may print or save one article per journal issue.
