Pinewood Derby Pack 186 Rules for 2014

Have Fun! As with all pack events the first rule is to have fun.

The Pinewood Derby (PWD) is a Pack event so all participants and leaders should be in uniform. The following rules have been developed to keep the PWD fair for all participants. Cars shall qualify based on these rules. NO other rules shall be applicable. The decisions of the race committee are final. The committee will determine if there is a rules violation and how to best remedy the situation to allow for participation. 1) Kits: Cars will be built from official BSA kits. (provided by the Pack) Outside vendor kits might not be official BSA and may be disqualified. 2) Scout Participation: Scouts must participate in the construction of their car. 3) Cars: Only cars built in the current school year will be eligible to race. 4) Width: Overall width shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches. 5) Length: Overall length shall not exceed 7 inches. 6) Weight: Weight shall not exceed 5 oz. as determined by the official scale used during inspection. Be prepared to add or delete weight prior to registering your car. 7) Wheel base: Axel slots should be used as provided and the wheels must be at least 1 ¾ inches to allow for the track guide. 8) Details: Details such as: driver, steering wheel, decals and paint are permitted, but should be securely fastened. All paint and glue must be dry. 9) Starting devices: The car must be free-wheeling and accelerate from the force of gravity alone. Starting devices are not allowed. Weight must be stationary and affixed to the car. Liquid weighting is not allowed. 10) Springs: Springs are not allowed. 11) Bearings: Washers and bushing of any type are not allowed. 12) Lubrication: Official BSA lubricants are white Teflon or powdered graphite. No liquid lubricants. Please apply these in the pit prior to registering you car. 13) Axles: Only those axels (nails) provided in the PWD kit are permitted. Axels may be de- burred but chroming or any other technical process or smoothing is not allowed. 14) Wheels: Only those wheels provided in the PWD kit are permitted. Wheels CANNOT be modified. Wheels may be de-burred as long there is no alteration to the original size and shape. The original BSA markings must not be altered. 15) Registration: Only one car per scout will be permitted. Once registered the car will enter the staging area and cannot be accessed for any reason accept for transport to the track. Repair of a broken part is permitted under the supervision of a race official. 16) Starting a race: No portion of a car will extend beyond the starting gate. These are Pack 186 rule and may differ from district race rules. If you wish participate in the district race check district rules on their website.
