Envision Pilot Test

ENVISION PILOT TEST

The Envision® rating system developed by the non-profit Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI) and the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design is a mechanism to holistically incorporate and evaluate community, environmental, and economic benefits of infrastructure projects. Envision encourages whole system design, life cycle considerations, and stakeholder engagement. Envision includes 60 sustainability concepts organized into 5 categories: Quality of Life, Leadership, Resource Allocation, Natural World, and Climate and Risk.

ISI provides the Envision Guidance Manual, Pre-assessment Checklist, and Scoresheet for use free of charge on their website (sustainableinfrastructure.org). These tools are described in the Envision Fact Sheet . The use of Envision in project development and/or project self-assessments is a consistent approach to address a comprehensive list of sustainability features. This supports the consideration of best practices and systems thinking to improve infrastructure performance and minimize negative impacts.

ISI also provide a credentialing program for professionals and an awards program for sustainable projects. Professionals can apply for formal training and examination (both available on-demand online) to earn the Envision Sustainability Professional credential. Project teams may submit a project assessment and supporting documentation for third- party review and confirmation of achievement.

Hundreds of municipalities, consulting firms, and contractors are using Envision to improve the sustainability of infrastructure projects in North American and world-wide. The Envision Fact Sheet for Public Sector demonstrates support from municipal infrastructure owners for Envision and cites several recent Requests for Proposals that require the use of Envision in project development.
