5:30 p.m. Adjournment Friday, October 14 – Field Tour to Porter Springs Recreation Area 1 Porter Springs has a diverse history ranging from Native American residency all the way to the historic gold-rush mining era. A major habitat for migratory birds, Porter Springs is one of the finest in Nevada, servicing as a stopover for over 125 avian species. Birders from all over America make it a point to come to Porter Springs to identify and photograph them!

It is located on the west side of the Seven Troughs Range in Pershing County - about 25 miles northwest of Lovelock.

During the tour, we will discuss human influence on the site, including cultural resources and recreational use, bird habitat, the hydrology of the spring and adjacent riparian/wetland area, effects of noxious weeds, the current composition, function and structure of vegetative communities, and the recent work the district has completed to truly make this a recreation site as identified in the WDO Recreation Management Plan.
