Joyce Temple Ward

WARD, Joyce Temple August 18, 2008, died after a sixteen month battle with a rare form of t- cell lymphoma and its complications. She was 65. A life long Nashvillian, she was preceded in death by her father, James William Crutcher, great nephew of Thomas Crutcher, Mayor of Nashville, 1819-1820, and mother, Josephine Dyer Crutcher, eldest daughter of Vanderbilt professor Gus Dyer; and nephew, Jonathan Shackford Deutsch. She is survived by her husband, David Lee Ward, Nashville; their daughter, Jessica Lee Temple McCarroll (Adrian); grandchildren, Alexandra Isobel and Zachary David, all of Hong Kong; her sister, Martha Shackford Deutsch (Don) of Half Moon Bay, CA and aunt, Anne Dyer Krickel of Columbia, SC. A Latin teacher, she graduated BA with honors in 1965 at George Peabody College. She began her 41 year teaching career at Franklin High School in 1968. From 1970 - 2007, she taught at The Harpeth Hall School where she served as chair of the Foreign Language Department for fifteen years. She was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1984 and was the first recipient of the Owen Chair for Excellence in Teaching in 1994. Additionally, she was named Tennessee Latin Teacher of the Year by the Tennessee Foreign Language Teachers Association in 1984, and received the Golden Apple Award for Teaching Excellence from Peabody College - Vanderbilt in 1997. With her passion for academic travel, she led fifteen trips from 1983 to 2006, mainly to Italy, Greece and Egypt where her contacts with Chicago House, the archeological research facility run by the University of Chicago in Egypt, allowed her to take students to archeological sites off-limits to the public. A Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, August 23, 2008 at Christ Church Cathedral, 900 Broadway, with a reception to follow.
