SECOND SAIL: Sail Trading Since 1983

SECOND SAIL: Sail trading since 1983.OWNER; Alan Barber (Licensed second hand dealer)

Thank you for contacting Second Sail regarding second hand sails. I have written a number of articles about secondhand sails. These have been posted to my eBay “guides”: ie; DIY repair of sails, and cutting down larger sails to fit a particular rig, buying secondhand sails and more. My web site (secondsail.net) will take you directly to the eBay store; click on the ‘alansecondsail’ icon and scroll down the page to see the guides. I have added a range of hardware to my eBay store to facilitate these DIY activities, sail repair and alteration. CONTACTING ME However please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. Email; [email protected] or mobile 0408020258. If you prefer a land line number, you can try my wife’s line, Mardi Gray on (02) 9402 5658. If I am in the office, I will pick up the phone if you ask for me, or alternatively call you back. I will be sending out notification of a sail list updates, for those who have registered with their email address. The alternate email address; [email protected] is also used sometimes. INSPECTING SAILS My address is 60 Bimburra Ave St Ives NSW 2075 Sydney Australia. I am on the corner of Warrimoo Ave. Please call me before visiting. PHOTOGRAPHS Many of the most recently arrived sails have been photographed. Generally, any areas of damage will be shown in the photographs. These photos will be listed on YouTube, my channel; alanrb1. PURCHASING SAILS. Cheques can only be accepted where adequate proof of identity is accepted. Credit cards carry a surcharge of 2.5% or a minimum of $5 which is non refundable. Direct deposit or payment via paypal is fine, as is cash. FREIGHT The freight column is an average estimate. Further from Sydney, and more remote, will cost more, while cities in NSW, VIC and south east QLD will cost less than average. MAIL ORDER I will always try to give an honest assessment of sails for mail order. It wastes everyone’s time if the sail comes back, because it is unsuitable. Fortunately it’s a rare occurrence. All mail orders are returnable if unsuitable, for a full refund of the purchase price. Generally 14 days is allowed for the assessment and return. Costs to the customer include freight both ways and a 2.5% or $5, which ever is larger, surcharge where the item was paid for by credit card. If I’ve made a significant mistake, I will normally be happy to reimburse the cost of freight. The item must be returned in similar condition as to when dispatched, else compensation will be requested. SAIL HIRING Sails have been hired, that is, sold and bought back after a period of time, at a predetermined price. This can be useful if you need a sail, but I haven’t got exactly the right one in stock, or you are racing a hire boat that doesn’t come equipped with a spinnaker etc. CONDITION OF SAILS For racing, the minimum quality standard would in most cases be VG or higher. This grading is for a sail with an estimated 70% of its life left or a 7 out of ten rating. Often this level of sail has no repairs evident, and signs of moderate use only. For cruising the minimum quality could be GOOD or approx 50% of its life left. Sails below this level, i.e. FAIR can still be used on yachts, but are probably better suited to awning, shade sail, or car port duties. These sails will be less reliable, and will require greater maintenance, while probably performing at a reduced level. TRADING IN OR SELLING YOUR SAILS to Second Sail I can often make you an offer for your second hand sail, or alternatively, consignment may be preferred. That’s where you get paid after I have sold your sail. You remain the owner of the sail until it’s sold. SAIL LIST ABBREVIATIONS I intend to photograph all new stock and host the photos on my face book site (secondsail.net). Listing with photos will have the abbreviation FB. Mainsail; Most cruising mainsails have slugs or slides on the luff (leading edge). Slugs are round and perform the same function as a boltrope (ie feed into the mast track connecting the sail to the mast). Slides are flat and commonly come in 5/8” or the larger 7/8” width. The foot of the sail may also have slugs or slides fitted. eg. Sw36 7/8 / 5/8 reef old… The meaning of this is; from yacht Seaway36’, 7/8”slides on the luff and 5/8” slides on the foot, one reef, old… An example of batten setups; 2fbat/2lbat req. This means; 2full battens and 2leech battens required to complete the sail. “Inc” means battens included. “llexp” means leech line exposed. This situation is commonly one of the initial indications of ware. The sail cloth enclosing the leech line is worn exposing the leech line NCV, LSN, OS STO, these abbreviations relate to the area of storage used to store the sail, and can be ignored.

Thank you for your interest. I hope I can be of assistance. Alan
