Best Continental bulls topped at £365 and £328 from Lodge Farms Ltd whose Simmental heifers also sold well at £245 and £232. Limousin heifer calves from Tim Rawlings made £220 and £200, Blonde heifers from J W Ball made £250, his Blonde bull a strong £322. Blue calves again in strong demand topping for bulls at £390 from W F Fisher. £320 for D Rabbatt & Son whose weaned blue at 2 months made £430 and blue heifer at £320.
The native breed calves sold particular well with Hereford heifers selling as well and sometimes better than the bulls. Alfie Jones named sire Hereford bulls made £202 - £272 with his Hereford heifer at £235. A R Highmans Hereford bulls made £260 and £272. T S Baker’s heifers £190 and £130.
Few Friesians on offer with many more needed to meet a strong demand M/s B Gough made £142 and £130 of bulls £72 for A R Highman. 5 DAIRY CATTLE & BEEF COWS 11.30 am - Auctioneer: Jon Pullin A freshly calved Friesian Cow (2nd Calver) sold to £1480 from M/s C B Powell & Sons, Shurdington. 468 STORE CATTLE 11.30 am - Auctioneer: Jon Pullin, Arthur White & Chris Voyce Averages: Steers £649, Heifers £583 A reasonable entry saw some grand runs of cattle on offer with the trade similar to the last few weeks. Despite the drop in the beef trade last week, the Continental x steers (24 – 30mnths) met a fair trade with only a handful of very strong sorts forward topping at £922 (123p/kg) & £908 (123p/kg) from M/s Wallis & Wallis, Black Bourton. The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £805 (141p/kg) from Mr J Barford, Earthcott. The smaller or lesser shaped sort traded generally between £680 - £770 (120 – 130p/kg). An overage British Blue steer sold to £828 (112p/kg) from M/s M & R Jones, Cambridge. The strong Continental heifers (24 – 30mnths) were very short in number with the better meated sorts selling to £785 (135p/kg) for a Simmental from Mr R Bradley, Sedbury with his Hereford heifers to £658 (125p/kg). The farming cattle (18 – 24mnths) saw another wonderful show of cattle forward. Trade was similar to last week with the stronger better shaped sorts traded between £750 - £850 (140 – 155p/kg) topping at £875 (148p/kg) & £805 (145p/kg) for British Blue x steers from M/s S & W Ball, Charfield. The general run of Continental steers traded between £650 - £700 (125 – 145p/kg) The native breeds saw Hereford steers to £850 (144p/kg) from M/s N & S Doel, Crudwell. Friesian steers sold to £838 (121p/kg) from M/s W Prior & Sons, Castle Coombe. The heifers (18 – 24mnths) were a firm trade with the better shaped sorts over £700 topping at £975 (151p/kg) £900 (156p/kg) & £875 (160p/kg) for a grand run of Limousin’s from M/s S & W Ball, Charfield. The general run of Continental heifers traded between £550 - £650 (130 – 145p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus heifers to £670 (150p/kg) from M/s D & D Baber & Sons, Westonbirt. The younger steers (15 – 18mnths) sold to a firm trade with the best Continental steers selling between £720 - £800 (135 – 160p/kg) topping at £860 (154p/kg) £780 (144p/kg) for Charolais steers from M/s D & M Whitcombe, Minety. The general run of Continental steers traded between £650 - £740 (120 – 140p/kg). The native breeds saw Aberdeen Angus steers to £825 (149p/kg) from M/s W Prior & Sons, Castle Coombe. A grand run of 53 Hereford cattle from Ms Millington & Son, Wickwar sold to £595 (142p/kg) & £550 (172p/kg) The younger heifers (15 – 18mnths) saw the better shaped sorts trading between £580 - £650 generally topping at £675 (142p/kg) for Charolais (16 - 17mnths) from Mr J Pierce, Berkeley.
