Epic Hero Project
Over the past few weeks we have discussed Odysseus and how he is an example of an epic hero. Epic heroes have been a part of our storytelling culture for centuries. These heroes range from Odysseus and The Odyssey to Simba and The Lion King and Luke Skywalker and Star Wars. All of these heroes must overcome obstacles along their epic journey. This project will be in 3 parts.
You will be creating your own epic hero, one that fulfills the characteristics of the epic hero and is of the 21st century. You will be required to create one adventure story to accompany your hero that demonstrates how he/she represents the epic hero. Use the characteristics below to guide you through your project.
Characteristics of the Epic Hero
1. Heroes do share a common function as symbols of the ideals and values of their communities and cultures.
2. Unusual birth
3. Must leave home (complete a journey)
4. Has help from someone, often old and wise, with magical and mystical power.
5. Weapon or protective device given to him or her that will be useful on the journey.
6. The hero has to succeed at a series of trials that challenge and build his or her moral strength and character.
7. Upon successful completion of the trials, the hero achieves the ultimate goal of the journey.
8. If a division or conflict with the hero's father or father-figure is part of the hero's journey, reconciliation or healing with the father occurs as part of the hero's journey.
9. He or she brings new wisdom and important cultural values back to the community upon return.
Part 1
You will begin by using a web tool to outline your hero. This will be the basis for the rest of the project. You will answer questions posed by the website to create an outline of the hero: name, background, weapon of choice, beliefs, etc.

Step two: put your name and title of the assignment in the boxes up top “Epic Hero Outline”
Staple in this order: rubric, part I, part II, and then finally part III Step three: follow the steps on the link to complete the outline-you must complete each one
Step four: print your outline (printer Lexmark T642)
This sheet will be turned in with your completed project. STAPLE IT TO THIS PAGE! Complete sheet= 25 points
Part 2
Designing your epic Hero
The second part of this assignment is a written description and a model of your hero. Your description must include a physical description and include a description of how your hero fulfills the qualities of an epic hero. A visual aide must accompany this description. Get creative with it! You can draw your hero (must include color) or create a model. A diorama would also be a good option for this part of the assignment.

A Creative Writing Assignment
The third and last part of your project is a creative writing assignment. You will write one “book” that explains a challenge of your hero. The assignment must be written in verse (like The Odyssey) and must include at least one of each of the following: epic simile, epithet, and examples of personification. Make sure that your story shows us how your hero is an epic hero through incorporating the characteristics of the epic hero. This must also include an introduction similar to the blue part in your orange book. Introduce the journey of your hero and where he/she has been and where he/she is going.
