Publication-Based Ranking of Graduate Programs in Sociology 2 This ranking of graduate programs in sociology is based on the publication productivity of the faculty of these programs for a five-year period. The sole measure was publication in the three most prestigious sociological journals: American Sociological Review, American Journal of Sociology, and Social Forces. Note that it does not include publication in specialty journals nor production of books in the field. It should be considered as one type of counter-check to the reputational ranking on the previous page. If a school ranks higher in this listing, that is noteworthy and may indicate a trend for the future, but a lower ranking using this methodology is not necessarily an indication of deterioration of the program.

Please note that in FOB—in the alcove between the second and third floors—there is a recent copy of the ASA publication on Graduate Programs in Sociology. That resource will list areas of specialization for each graduate program, the names and contact information for faculty members in that department, and other useful information. We ask that the book be used in the building so it is available to all, but please do use it. Likewise, there is a publication on all members of the American Sociological Association, so if you want to contact an author whose work you admire or want to ask about graduate school, this is a good place to locate these sociologists.
