Greek Mask Project

Greek Mask Project Oedipus The King

ASSIGNMENT

In Ancient Greek theatre, actors wore masks with hyperbolic facial features to convey the emotions of the characters that they were playing. Since the Ancient Greeks performed in huge mega-theatres without the aid of Jumbo-trons, the audience couldn’t see the expressions of the actors. These masks made it easier to tell how the characters felt and what they represented.

For this project, you are going to pick one of the main characters of Sophocles’ Oedipus the King. You can choose: Oedipus, Jocasta, Tiresias, or Creon. Through class work and homework readings, assignments, and discussions, you will have a good idea of who your character is and what s/he represents in the story. At home, you will create a mask to represent your chosen character, and you will present your mask on TBA in class. (No class time will be dedicated to the creation of this project – it’s on you!) When creating your mask and presentation, you should take into consideration your character’s physical and personality traits, symbolism in Oedipus the King, and motivation(s). BE CREATIVE!! This is your chance to show how well you can create a non-linguistic representation of everything a character is about in a really cool and artistic way.
