Media Manipulation by Iona Dobrescu
One of the most important media group, TruMedia, is coming before bankruptcy. This media group produces two news papers, and runs a TV channel and a broadcasting channel. All these media receive high likeability, because the editors are known for best investigated and truthful news reporting. Hence, during the last months the two channels drastically lost audience. Also the news papers had to reduce the numbers. The company didn’t make financial profit. The manager has come before the situation to dismiss all the employees, because e couldn’t pay their salary any longer. The beginning of the crises was related to the fact, that the owner of the TruMedia, Mr. Kaiser, was involved in a financial scandal. In public he is accused by his worst rival to have defalcated donor funds. With a charity campaign TruMedia had collected money to build new houses for flood victims. Mr Kaiser is said to have taken most of the donors to buy a hotel. The rival media group had proclaimed a boycott of Tru Media, and the public followed it. Mr. Kaiser rejected the denouncement and wanted to put his innocence into proof by bringing his financial balance into public. But none of the news papers was willing to publish this information. They all are happy to have expelled a strong competitor. Good advice is needed. Mr. Kaiser arranged a press conference to make his statement about this accuse. But most of the journalists didn’t attend this meeting, because they don’t want to support a so called bamboozler. To reach again the place in the public audience Mr. Kaiser and his editors see the last chance to place very special news in the prime time of the TV channel. Mr Kaiser promises the position of the headmaster in the TV channel to that person, who has the best idea. One of the war correspondent of TruMedia, Mr. Jakos, presents his idea. Mr. Jakos is one of the best reporters, he receives great respect from all audiences. As the crisis of the company runs parallel to the end of the war in Iraq, Mr. Jakos will use this context for a sensation. The kidnapping of a correspondent could be pretended. The incident would be created by themselfes to make sure that no other competing channel could send this information first. It would be an exclusive story. TV has the possibilities and facilities to present this story very realistic. Should Mr. Kaiser accept this idea?
