SSS Advisory Board Minutes

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Present: Sammi Biesterveld, Stephanie Cisewski, Sheila Dunlap, Darrell Hill, Angel Pingry, Ryan Reisner, Erin Riddle, Megan Spreeman, Sean Szydel, Nancy Vue, Tony Xiong, Brooke Yoder, Bruce Ouderkirk, Andy Strowig

Reports:  Sammi Biesterveld read through the minutes from the last meeting, and they were approved.  Treasurer’s Report: Balance is $703.33, but we need to pay Sodexho $60.17.

Old Business:

 Gen 100 Class Visits: Megan and Sheila went to Trudy Bement’s Gen 100 class to talk about the SSS program, and it went well. We still need to visit Patti See’s class.  Welcome Cookout: The cookout was a lot of fun, and a lot of people came! A big thank-you to Bruce for cooking the food, and to Sheila for buying the food. We also raised $11.00 from the 50/50 raffle.  Fall 2013 Ideas: --October Ideas: An idea suggested for our October social was going to Ferguson’s Apple Orchard. The admission is $5.00, and the Board could pay for half, depending on how many would like to go. It was suggested that we send an email to SSS members to see how many are interested, and then we would have students sign up in advance. At the apple orchard, there is a hay ride, a little haunted house, and a corn maze. --It was also suggested that we go to an apple orchard in Chippewa Falls where admission is free. --We also thought of having two socials in October, possibly a Halloween party and the apple orchard. --November Ideas: It was suggested that we have a holiday party, where we would have Secret Santa. Another idea was to make cards and send them overseas. Brooke will research sending cards overseas to soldiers. --Nancy will look into sending a survey of what SSS members would like to do for activities, and Andy and Bruce will send it out to everyone.

New Business:  Fundraising: --Hot cocoa sale: We could hold a hot cocoa sale to get rid of leftover hot cocoa. It was suggested that we get the word out by having more publicity, or even sell it off-campus. --Mega: We could bag for tips at Mega again, which could possibly be in March. --Eat for a cause: Buffalo Wild Wings gives 20% of night profits to organizations. They usually hold the fundraisers from 4-9pm. Burrachos also holds fundraisers, and usually gives 15% of profits to organizations. It was suggested that we do one in the fall and one in the spring. We would need to get the word out and make sure people get flyers.  Volunteering: --YMCA: It was suggested that we could volunteer at the before- and after-school program at the YMCA. --Adopt-a-Family: We could buy food and presents as a group for a family in need. We choose what size family we want, and we gift them with presents and/or food for the holidays. --The Community Table: Sean Szydel will look into the possibility of our volunteering at The Community Table for next year, as their schedule is pretty full already. --The Salvation Army: It was suggested that we ring the bells for the Salvation Army around the holidays. --Nancy went to the Community Action Fair and found out about the Princess Tea Party at the Children’s Museum. It is an opportunity to spend some time with children for just a couple of hours. --Lastly, Students for United Way are doing some volunteer work, so it was suggested that we join them.

Open Floor:

--Andy Strowig mentioned the Career Conference in the Ojibwa Ballroom in Davies. It is a way to find out more about organizations and to meet recruiters.

***Next meeting: Tuesday, October 8, at 5:00pm, Little Niagara (211) ***
