PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The department consists of seven PE staff, led by a Head of Department who works closely alongside a Head of Girls’ Physical Education. All members of staff assist in the delivery of Physical Education and a range of extra-curricular activities, including GCSE, BTEC Level 3, and A Level workshops. The school has its own gymnasium and sports hall, as well as use of a further indoor space for activities such as dance. In addition to tennis courts and a shared field on site, the school also owns a games field and purpose built pavilion at Cromers Corner, just under a mile away. During the winter months this facility is used largely for football whilst in the summer term it is our home cricket ground and the venue of our annual sports day.

The school enjoys an enviable reputation in a wide range of sports, including athletics, netball, football, handball, rounders, table tennis, indoor rowing and cricket. Fixture lists include both school and House matches, as well as participation in district, county, and occasionally, national tournaments. An encouraging proportion of pupils gain representative honours at district, county and even national level. The commitment and dedication of all the staff who give up their time to run clubs is highly valued.

In addition to the range of competitive sport the department has developed a number of courses within the curriculum. All students experience one period of PE and one period of Games in Key Stage 3, with one period of compulsory games in Key Stage 4. GCSE PE is offered as an optional subject at Key Stage 4 and the department is proud of the consistently successful results that are achieved. Students can develop their interest further in the Sixth Form, where the BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Sport is offered. Continued/………………..

Page 2 The approach of the school towards sport could be seen to be a traditional one. Competition is encouraged and excellence rewarded. This having been said, fundamental to all that is done is the desire to involve and to motivate all pupils regardless of their level of ability. Whilst being taken seriously, every effort is made to ensure that the element of pleasure is never lost sight of by those taking part; the participation of the many is not sacrificed for the achievements of the few.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Fulston Manor is an extremely successful, non-selective school, with a current roll of 1283, which includes a rapidly growing sixth form of almost 300 and intense pressure for places in all other years. In addition to the school’s reputation for academic success and quality pastoral care, we are also involved in a significant amount of work with other schools, both providing intensive support and delivering a wide range of training opportunities. We have close links with local universities and are particularly proud of our staff induction programmes.

Having opened a new £3.7 million Mathematics and English block in 2014 and a similarly costed 6th Form Centre in 2016, plans have been approved for a larger Science and general teaching block, which would complete the regeneration of the site. These projects, along with the other high quality buildings, ensure that all staff teach within an outstanding learning environment.

As lead school within a multi academy trust, which includes a local primary school, there are numerous opportunities for staff to broaden their own professional experience and to seek career progression within the school. Many of our members of staff have achieved internal promotion and individually tailored development programmes ensure that appropriate training and support is provided for all. Everyone is encouraged to participate in whole school improvement work and we believe that this participation is a major factor in our continuing success.

This school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
