GLE 2O6 Culminating Activity 2012 The culminating activity for GLE 2O9 is to create a product that illustrates: a) what you have learned about yourself this year (this could include knowledge that you have gained both inside and outside of our school environment), b) the skills you have used and acquired in grade 10, and c) the plans and strategies that relate to preparing for your future.

Please note: each of these options involves a brief class presentation in which you share your work with the class.

Please note: Since we are running short on time, this will be your only remaining work for the year. Rubrics/marking schemes coming soon!

In order to do this, please choose ONE of the following:

Option #1: Verbal/Visual Essay Create a personal collage of images and text that represents an accomplished person in a career you might choose in the future. Images are to be thoughtfully arranged from a variety of sources.

Images may be drawings or photos created by you, and/or found pictures and graphics from magazines, newspapers, and the internet. Along with these images, you must include a minimum of 10 “verbal” elements including quotations and personal commentary. These words and images must create a clear and artistic expression of the above criteria (see a. b. and c.)

Option #2: Storybook or Graphic Novel

Create a storybook or graphic novel about a character that has overcome obstacles or resolved a conflict. Use images, narration and dialogue to communicate this. Illustrations may be drawings or photos created by you, and/or found pictures and praphics from magazines, newspapers, and the internet. These must be accompanied by lines of dialogue and/or narration in the style of a children’s book or graphic novel. Text and illustration must be balanced so that the story makes sense. If the images are in comic style and communicate a great deal on their own, less writing may be required as compared to a storybook format. The product should be create a clear and artistic expression of the above criteria (see a. b. and c.)

Format: the creation must be in the form of a “bound” book that is no smaller than an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of paper when folded and does not need to be larger than 8 ½ x 11 when open. The story may be bound by putting the pages together in a binder or a pre-bound journal available at art stores or the book may be spiral bound at a print shop. Original drawings may be sketched directly in the book or pictures and/or photos may be glued onto pages or the book. The book should be between seven to ten pages in length (perhaps less for a graphic novel – check with Mr. Trinh). GLE 2O6 Culminating Activity 2012

Evaluation: The product will be evaluated based on how well the subject matter is reflected through images, narrative and/or dialogue, and also based on effort, organization and overall effectiveness.

Option #3: A Virtual Blog

Open up a word document on your computer. Title the document under your full name and Blog Summative. Each blog must be a minimum of 250 words each.

Blog #1: Cell phone use in school and/or other social media controversies.

Blog #2: Bullies, conflict resolution, anger management

Blog #3: A day in the life of an NSS student

Blog #4: Your choice – see me for approval

Students doing the Blog Assignment will read and respond to at least two blogs written by classmates. Each comment must be at least 50 words. Responses must be to the individual’s ideas and are to be appropriate and non-critical.

Evaluation: You will be evaluated on the expression of ideas in your blogs, your thoughtful responses to the blogs of others, and your ability to reveal some insights that relate to the critera outlined at the top of this handout (see a, b and c).
