Mrs. Drew Allen [email protected] (469) 219-2180 ext. 80552 Room: 2245 Tutoring Hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday Before and after school, or by appointment

ASL 1 This is an introduction to American Sign Language and to the culture of Deaf people. The goal upon completion of this course is to be able to carry on a basic conversation in ASL with confidence and skill, to be comfortable interacting with deaf people, and to gain a general understanding and appreciation for their culture. This will be accomplished through practicing expressive and receptive skills, alone, with a partner, in small groups and with the class as a whole. Students will participate in a Christmas (Holiday) concert and/or an end of year concert, as well as group projects.

ASL 2 This is an intermediate level class and a continuation of ASL 1. The purpose is to expand your language skills and deepen your understanding of the Deaf World. The goal upon completion of this course is to have an expanded vocabulary and an increased understanding of the Deaf culture while gaining confidence and comfort communicating with Deaf people and interacting in the Deaf community. Participation in a Christmas (Holiday) and/or an end of year concert as well as a song or acting project is an example of the fun-while-learning nature of this class. Sign only days will increase as the year goes on.

My classroom culture is very upbeat and positive. I encourage high personal standards, self-respect and positive self-worth. I love bringing out the greatness within you. We will discuss this in depth in class.

Materials:

 Pens  Loose Leaf Paper  Binder  Notebook or Journal (for journaling)  Box of Tissue  Sign Language App – Free or Low Cost (your choice). Will discuss in class Grading

Summative: 60%  Exams & Projects - Expressive (Individual and group projects and out of class work) - Receptive (written/verbalized)

 Formative: 40% - Homework assignments - Participation - Quizzes

* Please note!! It is YOUR responsibility to check for missed homework, exams or projects when absent. Tests and quizzes may be made up before or after school and must be completed or scheduled within one class period (when your class meets) for every one day of excused absence! If homework or projects were assigned before absence, it is due upon return, otherwise the next class period.

Homework is expected ON THE DATE IT IS DUE! Homework will be accepted for up to 70% on the 2nd class after the due date. Homework will NOT be accepted after the 2nd day it was due!

My “Rules” consist of what I call Above the Line Behavior. We will talk more about that the first day or two of class, but basically this means:

 Respecting Yourself and Others  Not putting yourself or others down!  Having or developing a Positive Outlook

We will discuss a few classroom expectations in more detail. You’re input is welcome.

My job is to teach ASL. I prefer to do that while having fun and bringing out your best.

I welcome parent emails or calls! Always!

It’s going to be a great year.
