THREE-WAY TIE FOR THE LEAD AFTER THE SECOND ROUND OF THE CALLAWAY GOLF PGA SENIOR CPC

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – At the halfway mark of the $285,000 event, Mike San Filippo of Hobe Sound, Fla., Will Frantz of North Port, Fla., and Darrell Kestner of Glen Cove, N.Y., share the second- round lead of the Callaway Golf PGA Senior Club Professional Championship with 5-under-par 139. The wind gusts picked up throughout the day at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., presenting difficulties for the 264-player field, resulting in only 36-players breaking par. San Filippo, the 2002 champion, began the second-round in a four-way tie for fourth place and is attempting to join Ed Sabo (2000-01) of Tequesta, Fla., Roger Kennedy (1992- 94) of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Tom Joyce (1990-91) of Huntington, N.Y., as a back-to-back winner. “It was a bit of a struggle for me today as I didn’t play as well as I did yesterday (69), but I managed to get it around with an under-par score so I am very pleased,” said San Filippo, PGA Life Member who finished in a tie for 11th place in the 2004 championship. “The South Course has some bite to it as the greens are more difficult to handle with an increased slope and I had a hard time putting on the greens today.” Frantz and Kestner, who are both playing in their third consecutive national championship, began their rounds in a tie for eighth place and fired 3-under-par 69s through their solid play. “I birdied the first hole and bogeyed number five, but then I made nine consecutive par putts and finally ended the round with three birdies and a par on the eighteenth hole,” said Frantz, PGA Head Professional at Bobcat Trail Golf Course in North Port, Fla. “I hit 16 of 18 greens in regulation but the greens are a lot slower on the Dye Course than the South Course and I just couldn’t get any speed on the putts, but I tried to remain patient.” Kestner, who finished in a tie for eighth place in 2004, relied on his iron shots today, allowing him to enter the final two rounds as a co-leader. “I played great today as I hit the ball extremely well and close to the hole and only missed three greens in the first 36 holes,” said Kestner, PGA Head Professional at Deepdale Golf Course in Manhassett, N.Y. “I still haven’t gotten the putter hot and that is normally my best feature, but I am staying very patient and trying to be there in the end.” John McNaney, PGA Life Member of Spring Hill, Fla., and John Godwin, PGA Master Professional at Godwin Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ga., put together 2-under-par 70s for a tie for fourth place with a two-day total of 140, one shot off the pace. First round leader, Joseph Gutterman, PGA Retail Facility Manager at Palm Coast Golf Outlet in Fla., carded a second-round 5-over-par 77 for a two-day total of even-par 144, and stands in a tie for 18th place. Seventy-four players made the 36-hole cut of 3-over-par 147 to advance to the final two rounds, which will be played on the South Course. Callaway Golf is in their fourth year as the title sponsor of the PGA Senior Club Professional Championship. The top-35 finishers at the conclusion of Friday’s final round will earn a berth in the 2006 Senior PGA Championship, May 25-28, at Oak Tree Golf Club in Edmond, Okla. The winner of the Callaway Golf PGA Senior Club Professional Championship will have his name inscribed on the Leo F. Fraser Trophy and will receive a first place check for $20,000.
