Typography in Design
Description
We will be defining all elements of typography and understanding its position in the strategic design. Students, in groups, will be making their own ad including only typography and explaining their rationale.

Introduction
We will present the definition of each element of typography and its position in strategic design. Students should have already been introduced to all design elements; we will now be focusing only on typography. Students also should have already been familiarized with the use of ‘gimp.’ Class time will be about one and a half hours.
Group Size
20-25
Learning Objectives
After completing this lesson, students will Be able to correctly identify design elements. Be able to distinguish varies types of fonts (i.e serif or sans serif). Enhance their creativity and strategic skills by providing a logical rationale of why each design element was used in their ad.
Guiding Question
What is the importance of typography in an ad design?
Materials
Computer with overheard projection for video and lecture Computers with Internet access in class for each student Gimp (online media editing) downloaded to each computer Procedures
1. Teacher will begin the class with a snippet from the documentary of the font ‘Helvetica.’ 2. Define all elements of type in design. 3. Assign the class into groups of about three to work on in-class, group assignment.
Assessment
Each group will choose any product to do an ad on. The design will only include type (with the exception of the logo), while keeping all design elements in mind. The ad will be done on ‘gimp,’ which should be downloaded on all computers. Once groups have completed their ad they will save it as a .pdf and load it onto the Google Presentation. All ads will be presented to the class and each group will explain their rationale behind the ad.
