Application For Sacred Music Institute Adult Scholarship Program Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America Department of Sacred Music

The Sacred Music Institute (SMI) is held every summer at the Antiochian Village. Its purpose is to provide specialized training for our choir members, choir directors and chanters to further their skills and abilities. Our overall purpose and mission in the Department of Sacred Music is as follows:

Department of Sacred Music Mission Statement The mission of the Department of Sacred Music is to provide leadership to the parishes of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese, drawing from the talents of the faithful in order to elevate the quality of music sung in our parishes, to serve as a resource for the publication of music, to organize workshops and seminars, to build strong ties of communication throughout the Archdiocese, to support the work of missions, and to be a positive influence in the creation of new works of liturgical music for the glory of God and the Holy Orthodox Faith.

The Sacred Music Institute has grown into one of the strongest resources available for Orthodox Christians of all jurisdictions to learn more about singing, chanting, or directing the choir, and for broadening our spiritual and practical understanding of Sacred Music in the Orthodox Church, to best provide the local parish with beautiful and fulfilling worship to our Lord.

The Department of Sacred Music is providing four scholarships to members of our Antiochian Archdiocese who, because of financial concerns, would not otherwise be able to attend the Sacred Music Institute. Each of these scholarships will provide for tuition, room and board at the SMI (based on double or triple occupancy). Special circumstances will also be considered by the Department and should be described in the personal essay below.
