POSITION SUMMARY PURPOSE: Performs selected dental duties that assist in patient care management; these duties are delegated in relation to the degree of training and in accordance with the objectives and policies of the organization and respective state laws governing such action and activities. Under direct supervision demonstrates skill in the performance of dental procedures and use of dental equipment.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires standing for long periods of time. Working in dental environment. Some bending and stretching required. Working under stress. Exposure to bodily fluids.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Normal dental office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned.)

1. Cleans calcareous deposits, accretions, and stains from teeth and beneath margins of gums using dental instruments.

2. Examines lymph nodes under patient’s chin to detect swelling or tenderness. Examines gums for sores and signs of diseases. JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: DENTAL HYGIENIST PAGE 3

3. Prepares patient, sterilizes and disinfects instruments, sets up instruments trays, prepares materials, and assist dentist during dental procedures as needed.

4. Takes and record medical and dental histories and vital signs of patients.

5. Expose dental diagnostic x-rays.

6. Assists dentist in management of medical and dental emergencies.

7. Provide clinical services and health education to improve and maintain the oral health of patients.

8. Instruct patients in oral hygiene and plaque control programs. Recommend treatment programs for patients.

9. Greet patients as they arrive, verify records, direct patients to appropriate areas, and answer telephone calls.

10. Prepares exam rooms with equipment and supplies as needed for examination procedures; cleans and restocks examining rooms as necessary.

11. Attends and participates in Health Center conferences and meetings as requested.

12. Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION: Bachelor of Science Degree in Dental Hygiene

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: Possession of State Dental Hygienist License.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE & SKILLS: Minimum of 2 years experience as a Dental Hygienist. Knowledge of dental hygiene theory and practice to give and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures to administer patient care. JOB DESCRIPTION TITLE: DENTAL HYGIENIST PAGE 3
