Passenger Transport Assistant – West Cluster of Schools 10 hours per week – Part Time, Fixed Term 1 year from September 2016. Grade 3 (£14,894 - £16,200) Salary Pro Rata*

Thank you for your interest in the above post at York High School. This post is new to our school following restructure of responsibilities within the Care and Achievement Team.

We are seeking to appoint a colleague who will work in partnership with our Associate Headteacher at York High School. The successful candidate will supervise young people with attendance issues between home and West Cluster Schools ensuring they arrive safely and on time for the start of the school day, giving due regard to each pupils’ individual needs and where necessary accompanying them to the door of the establishment where they attend. To assist in the checking of operators vehicles who transport young people between home and school. Your working hours will be 7:30am – 9:30am Monday to Friday, term time only.

You will be joining a team of colleagues who have significant skills and experience of supporting young people from a wide range of backgrounds and circumstances. York High School is an 11-16 mixed comprehensive school of approximately 800 pupils which opened in September 2007. In January 2009, we moved to our site on Cornlands Road where we are housed in an £18 million school and leisure facility fit for purpose in the 21st century.

As a Specialist Sports College, we work in partnership with the local authority, ensuring our school and buildings are at the heart of its community. We have excellent sports facilities on site including climbing centre, fitness suite, dance studio, sports hall and all weather pitch, as well as our 6 lane swimming, learner and hydrotherapy pools. JOB TITLE: Passenger Transport POST NUMBER: EPSAW060 Assistant (1 year fixed from JE REF: 1620 September 2016) Monday to Friday 2 hours per day, 10 hours per week term time only. REPORTS TO (Job Title): Associate Grade 3 Headteacher 1. MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB To supervise young people with attendance issues between home and West Cluster Schools ensuring they arrive safely and on time for the start of the school day, giving due regard to each pupils’ individual needs and where necessary accompanying them to the door of the establishment where they attend.

2. KEY TASKS:

i. To supervise pupils/students between home and school while travelling on the vehicle to ensure the comfort and safety of the young person and the driver. ii. To ensure that each young person is seated appropriately. iii. To ensure that parents/carers meet their side of the transportation contract in terms of ensuring each young person is ready for transportation in the morning from home and to meet the young person in the afternoon. iv. To assist the driver in ensuring the safety of pupils/students when boarding and alighting from the vehicle, including the safe operation of auxiliary equipment and clamping of wheelchairs; v. To work closely with the driver in the best interests of the young person. To develop an effective working relationship with the driver to ensure the young person receives a high quality service; vi. To ensure the property of the client is properly supervised. vii. To provide support to the young people during the journey as requested which may include taking appropriate action if the young person is feeling unwell. viii. To participate in the City of York Council’s Staff appraisal scheme and undergo regular supervision, attending team meetings and undertaking any appropriate training as required. ix. Undertake any other duties which may be required from time to time commensurate with the grade of the post 3. SUPERVISION / MANAGEMENT OF PEOPLE No. reporting - Direct: Indirect: No responsibility for supervision and management of staff.

4. CREATIVITY & INNOVATION Post holder works within the service policies and guidelines. They will be expected to use their experience and knowledge to solve problems associated with the safe transfer of pupils/students, such as access issues, appropriate seating of customers due to their particular needs.

Problems encountered within the service may change very quickly due to the young person’s individual needs and the post holder must be able to adapt their solutions quickly. 5. CONTACTS & RELATIONSHIPS The post holder will have daily contact with drivers and School staff. They will also have contact with individual pupils and students developing a close working relationship with them. They will have contact with the young persons parents or carers. It is expected that working relationships will need to be developed with School staff making them aware of any issues relating to an individual young person. 6. DECISIONS – discretion & consequences Decisions taken in this role relate to the service and the safety of the young people. The post holder must assess if the situation is one where they can make the decision or whether it should be passed to the transport manager.

They must make sure that the young people are able to access the transport safely, reporting any issues or changes to the transport manager. They must maintain constant awareness of the status of passengers and their personal needs. 7. RESOURCES – financial & equipment (Not budget, and not including desktop equipment.) Description Value

The post holder will be a passenger transport assistant on a vehicle costing approximately £60,000 8. WORK ENVIRONMENT – work demands, physical demands, working conditions & work context

Work demands . Post holder works within the framework of the route timetable but this could be altered. They will also be expected to check on the comfort and safety of the young person. Physical demands . Assisting the young people in boarding and alighting the vehicle and fixing wheelchairs into the clamping system.

Work conditions . Mixed working conditions inside and outside of the vehicle. The post holder may be exposed to bodily fluids and smells to the particular condition associated with the individual pupil/student. Work context . May have to deal with passengers who have special needs.

9. KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS  Must be physically fit.  First aid qualification or willingness to undergo training.  Must have good communication skills.  Self motivated.  Ability to work as part of a team.  Must be tidy and presentable in appearance  Must have a successful record of time management.  Must have a knowledge and understanding of people with disabilities and special needs.
