2016 NEWSLETTER : WEEK 8 - JUNE 11
Upton only winners on wettest Saturday since August, 2008
WITH six games cancelled, 11 abandoned and only one played to a finish – Upton inflicting the season’s first Division Two defeat on Widnes - the League suffered its wettest day for eight years on Saturday. The previous low was on August 9, 2008 when 16 games were washed out and two played. All credit to Upton for taking advantage of the only fixture played on the relatively dry Wirral. In a match originally reduced to 88 overs, they restricted Widnes to a tally of 154-9, Marais Fourie 35, Graeme Keenan 4-32, Tom Maguire 3-23. Upton replied with a brisk 155-1 in just 26 overs, Chris Stowell-Smith hitting a bright, unbeaten 87 and, with Nat Sariman’s 33, enjoying an opening stand worth 109. Upton’s 25-pointer lifts them to fourth place with Widnes staying second. That is two points behind Brooklands whose game at Alvanley was halted when they had reached 26- 2 in reply to their hosts’ 123, A. J. Hart 3-23, Rob Leech 3-33. At home to Northwich, Christleton got to 142-8, Atif Bajwa 42 not out, Mark Walker 3-57, when play ended. Likewise, Middlewich were 78-5 at Barrow, Iro De Silva having captured 4-8 when the rain came. Lindow were on 57-1 at home to Congleton , Ryan O ‘Brian scoring a rapid unbeaten 39. Similarly, Mobberley were going well at 61-0 at home to Stockport, Charles Nield 35, Will Edwards 21, when the elements intervened. ‘Biblical’ rain at Didsbury THERE was more play in Division One although all matches were eventually rained off or drawn. Leaders Didsbury failed to get started at home to Grappenhall after rain, reported by the locals to be of “ biblical proportions” had partly submerged the ground. Davenham did well to rack up 190 against Oxton, after being 46-6, before the rain arrived at tea at Butcher’s Stile, skipper Dan Hancock, 58 and Mike Sambell, 46, adding 100. Oxton included new North Wales Premier League quickie Ben Roberts from Brymbo - a young man of startling appearance - who took 5-62, while smart wicket-keeping from Marc DeBrabender earned him five catches and a stumping. Oulton Park reached 233-4 at home to Marple, after openers Danny Leech, 85 not out and Martyn East, 77 had put on 111. There was no further play. Tattenhall faced certain defeat at home to Bollington after being routed for 98 by Bollington, for whom Joe Binder, had the magnificent figures of 15-8-21-7. Bolly were 33-0 when RSP. Warrington totalled 154-7 and Weaverham 135-7 in response at Walton lea, before play ended. No cricket was possible at Grove Park between Cheadle Hulme and Sale. Goodwin Premiership ton …but not much else FOUR of the six games in the ECB Premier League were called off without a ball being bowled. Washed out were: Bowdon v Neston; Bramhall v Alderley Edge; Cheadle v Toft and Timperley v Hyde. Chester Boughton Hall’s high-quality batsman Warren Goodwin found time to notch an unbeaten 110 at home to Nantwich, Will Owen (59) helping him put on 139 for the third wicket in an incomplete tally of 214-4 from 49 overs. At Macclesfield, Urmston were struggling at 113-6 when rain arrived at 39 overs, Matt Parkinson 30 not out There was no change of note in any of the three divisions, the up to date placings being shown on page 4. Unicorns County Championship (11 a.m. daily) DORSET v CHESHIRE (at Bournemouth Sports Club, continues on Monday and Tuesday)
JUNE 11 NEWSLETTER: p8 Davis 11-119 as Cheshire beat Wilts in 2 days CHESHIRE made a flying start to their Unicorns county championship campaign when they beat Wiltshire by eight wickets inside two days at Tattenhall’s sunny Flacca Field on Sunday and Monday last week. The damage was done on the first morning when Wiltshire struggled to 70-7 and although they recovered to total 166 (Ashur Morrison 63) it was clearly an insufficient total on a pitch on which too many batsmen - on both sides – failed unaccountably and with Chester paceman Ash Davis enjoying his best county figures of 7-83 Although no one reached 50 in either Cheshire innings, there were sound efforts in the first knock from skipper Lee Dixon, 44, Rob Jones, 43, Calum Rowe, 37 and the last pair of Davis, 33 not out and Dan Woods, 36 who added 72 vital runs to reach a tally of 303 and lead of 137. Wilts fared slightly better second time around with 233, Morrison (73) again top scoring. Davis brought his match figures to a magnificent 11-119 with a 4-36 return, aided by spinner Woods, 3-83. This left Cheshire to score 96 late on the second evening, a tally they achieved at 100-2, Rick Moore 36 not out, Rob Jones 28. Tattenhall put on a top-class show staging their first-ever county championship match and although there was no need for the third day, both teams considered that the scores should have been higher on an excellent pitch provided by groundsman Brian Jarrard. Praise is also due to the hosts for their organisation, not least the efficient car parking arrangements. Cheshire will go into their next game, against Dorset by the seaside at Bournemouth from June 19 -21 with confidence restored after failing to qualify for the later rounds of the one-day knock-out. DEVELOPMENT GAMES CHESHIRE Development squad played an England Disabled XI in two T20 games at Marple on Sunday, June 5, winning the first game by 14 runs and tieing the second. They next take on their Shropshire counterparts at Whitchurch on Tuesday this week (11 a.m.).

Round 2 games to be played on Sunday, June 19 (1 p.m.) are: Weston v Maratime; Wilmslow Wayfarers v Great Budworth; Prestbury v Ashley; Disley v Stockport Georgians; Romiley v Lindow; Hawk Green v Hale Barns; Barrow v Widnes. Zimbabwe Adventure part 2 BEFORE moving on to Harare for the second leg of England’s 1996-97 cricket tour in Zimbabwe, the 15-strong Gulliver’s Travel party spent several interesting days staying at the ultra-colonial Victoria Falls Hotel. A small group wangled a visa-free day trip to Zambia, formerly Northern Rhodesia, by taxi across the giant Zambezi Bridge. We stopped while two intrepid members diced with death at the famous Bungee Jump (which cost the Zim equivalent of £50, plus another £50 for the video to prove you’d done it!). The roads in Zambia were so pot-holed our taxi driver had to do the dodgems. There was not a great deal to see in Livingstone so we swiftly returned. Next day we enjoyed the ultimate experience of a walk through Victoria Falls itself. It was like stepping into a new eco-zone as we got pleasantly drenched. We also took a helicopter flight over the Falls to see everything from another spectacular angle Back at the hotel, we watched fascinated the daily March of the Local Monkeys across the roof to the bakery, where they were given their daily bread ration. We spent two days at Hwange Game Park which, in days before widespread poaching, possessed just about every specie of wild animal in Africa. We sat outside at midnight watching the animals venture into a man-made floodlit salt pan to eat food left out for them The party arrived in Harare to be welcomed on the steps of our hotel, the once world-famous, but now de-colonialised Meikles, to be greeted by new tour leader and former England captain Mike Denness, The genial Scot was just about the nicest of the top ex-cricketers we ever met. Mr Swanton is not amused England played two ODIs and one Test at Harare Sports Club and failed to win any of them. Daily Telegraph cricket writer Martin Johnson had been sending home many critical comments about the tour, the country and the people he didn’t get on with. One morning he showed us a cable from the former great cricket columnist EW Swanton back in the UK which umphed: ”For God’s sake man, write about the cricket!” Martin declined to oblige. The Zim dollar was weak and we were able to enjoy a slap up 5-course dinner in Meikles nightly for the equivalent of £8, which led us to tip generously, so much so that the wonderful – and poorly-paid waiters were reduced to tears. We walked to the ground on the first day of the Test, past the well-kept bungalow garden of former Prime Minister Iain Smith. He was not at home We said hi! to Robin Faulkner, chairman of Widnes, a club enjoying an exchange of players with Zim at the tine. We then set off to walk round the ground and on returning gave ‘Robin’ a nod to which he responded: “How are you both, not seen you for a long time?” He turned out to be Robin’s strikingly similar brother Rupert, on the same family trip! Had an interesting chat on our last day with ex-Warringtonian John Crawley who had by then become one of the country’s best batsmen. He was looking forward to flying off with the England team for the second leg of their winter tour to New Zealand, where they were to win 2-0 Our final experience of a wonderful, but frustrating country, shortly to be torn apart by the farmland grabs, came at Harare Airport while we were waiting to fly home. The Air Zimbabwe plane due for Heathrow was suddenly requisitioned by the wife of President Mugabe, who pulled rank and decided she wanted to go shopping in Paris. This put our departure back many hours, causing multiple re-arrangements at the UK end for hundreds of people. Not a happy finish to a tour with so much so much to do and to see - apart from the eminently forgettable cricket. More Anon.
JUNE 11 NEWSLETTER: p13 DOREEN COLLYER IS REMEMBERED MEMBERS of the Neston and Chester Boughton Hall clubs have this week been mourning the tragic death of Doreen Collyer, aged 60, who died after being attacked by a Great White Shark while swimming off shore of the seaside town of Mindarie in West Australia. Doreen emigrated to Perth from Chester in 2011 with her husband David, a well-known Neston cricketer, so the couple could be nearer their son, Ben, also a former cricketer. Doreen had taken the post of nursing lecturer at Perth University and was held in high esteem there. The couple had recently taken out Australian citizenship. Doreen and Dave were also the parents of former England women’s cricketer Sarah, now a physiotherapist living in New Zealand. Former Neston chairman Jim Marshall said: “It was a horrendous shock to us all to hear what happened to Doreen. The Collyers were a lovely family, very sociable and we were sorry to lose them to Australia because they did great work for Neston Cricket Club”.
