As Einstein’s theory of general relativity predicts, time moves differently depending on where you are in a gravity field. A clock on top of a tall mountain — far from Earth’s center — will tick a tiny bit faster than a clock at the base of that same mountain. It’s not a mechanical error. Time actually passes faster at the top of that mountain. Most clocks aren’t accurate enough to register that ex- tremely subtle difference. After all, in 10 years, two clocks that are 1,000 meters apart in altitude will be off by just 31-millionths of a second. Scientists have already demonstrated that it is pos- sible to measure differences in Earth’s gravitational field by comparing the tick rate of two optical lattice clocks in different locations. However, until now those same gravity maps could be made just as accurately using other, cheaper techniques. The new clock can detect changes in just 1 cen- timeter of elevation, a measurement far more precise than was previously possible, Ludlow said. In addition, his team is part of an international collabo- ration that is using hypersensitive clocks to try to detect dark matter, the mysterious stuff that is thought to be five times more plentiful in the universe than normal matter. 10 Sunday, December 30, 2018 Gulf / Middle East

News Trump touts ‘big progress’ on in brief Juncker doubts Romania’s ability to assume EU presidency BERLIN: European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker trade in phone call with Xi voiced doubts on Saturday about Romania’s ability to take over the EU’s six-month rotating presidency next month, amid ten- sions between Bucharest and Brussels. Washington and Beijing have imposed tit-for-tat tariffs on more than $300 bn worth of goods Even if the country is “technically well prepared”, the “Bucharest government has not fully understood what it means to preside over the countries of the EU,” Juncker said in an interview with the newspaper die Welt. He said the EU presidency “requires a willingness to listen to others and a willingness to put one’s own concerns in the background. I have some doubts about this”. He also questioned the capacity of the country, faced with internal political tensions, to appear as a “compact unit” in Europe. (AFP)

More than one in three Germans would like Merkel to go early, says survey BERLIN: More than one in three Germans, or 38 percent, would like to see Chancellor Angela Merkel replaced at the head of gov- ernment before her term ends in 2021. According to a survey by the polling institute YouGov on behalf of dpa published on Satur- day, 43 percent think that she should stay in office as planned un- til the next federal elections in less than three years, while a total of 18 percent were undecided. Merkel handed over the chairman- ship of her Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party at the begin- ning of December after 18 years at the helm; she was replaced by the CDU’s secretary general, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer. She said at the time that she would like to remain chancellor for the entire term of office. If the government’s grand coalition between the CDU, its conservative Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) allies and the centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) continues, it is considered almost impossible. for the chancellor to be replaced as the SPD has no say in the election of her successor.
