Authoring Dvds Using Pre-Built Menus/Submenus

Encoremenus.doc rev 04/21/10 Authoring DVDs Using Pre-Built Menus/submenus Add additional chapter points (Scenes)

 Start Encore  The beginning of your avi on the Encore timeline is generally named Chapter 1, in fact Encore created it for you o You can optionally name it (them)

To show chapter names, right-click on the timeline and choose to Show Chapter Names. We will see how to provide our own names later): .

Right now, you should see the Chapter 1 tag on the timeline

Rename Chapter 1

 Select the chapter marker (below the playhead); it will turn red: Now, let’s change the name of the chapter

 In the Properties>Name window, type “Begin”

Add additional chapters

 Set your playback head to where you want the next chapter: (watch the Monitor window as you move the playhead)

 Right-click and choose Add Chapter Point  Select it  Name it appropriately

 Choose up to three additional points

 Be sure to select each marker and then assign a name in the Properties window  Here are the names of the first four of my chapters: Begin, Rocco, Train and Coco

 Add a Credits chapter  Here is my time line: Menus and Submenus

Generally a commercial DVD has at least two screens (may be more depending on how many scenes you have…. A menu screen/page and a submenu screen)

We will select a menu and submenu from the Premiere library

 The first screen (Main menu) usually has buttons for Play, View Scenes, Set up, Language etc  The Submenu page is usually a series of links to the scenes (chapters)…and is viewed by clicking a button on the main menu page Choose Menu Template from the Library  They are Photoshop psds!  We want a main menu screen and a submenu page (shows chapters/scenes plus a Play button).  You can modify or create your own from scratch  The pre-built menus are in the Library tab  Here are the Entertainment options:  Stay away from HD and Wide (16 x 9) options  Here I’ve decided on Projector Menu and Projector Submenu  Double-click to add each to your project

 My Project window: (The .m2v file is an MPEG clip that animates the projector)

 Now, click the Menus tab:

You should see two menus….see above

 Double-click on your main menu (NTSC_ProjectorMenu for me) OR  Use the Dropdown:

Delete buttons you don't need. o Use the Selection tool (Black Arrow) on the tool bar at the top…I only want Play Film and Scene Selection  Delete Special Features , Language and Extras  Use the Selection tool (OR the Move tool) to clean up the interface

o Select the button(s) you want to move o Use the arrow keys or the mouse to do the actual move o Use the Text tool and change the title to THE CATS

Here is my main menu screen: Button Routing

Must specify three Main Menu actions: what to do when: o DVD inserted o Don’t want to go to Chapter 1, as in the last module…instead jump to the main menu o PLAY FILM button is clicked o SCENE SELECTION button is clicked

First play…,what to do when DVD inserted  Click in the gray (unused) area of the Project tab, below the “Name” objects  Look at the Properties window  Choose the First Play Property o Use the First Play drop down to choose the NTSC_Projector Menu>Default …Or drag to the menu in the project window o In either case: when the DVD is inserted, show the main menu Play Film/Scene Selection button Routings

Approach:

 When Play Film button is selected, play the movie (basically go to the first chapter…I called Begin)  When Scene Selection is selected, jump to submenu page

First, the Play Film Button

 Select the Play Film button

 When clicked, we want the DVD player to go to Begin chapter (or whatever you named your first chapter)  Select the PLAY FILM button  Look at the Properties panel; the key for us is “Link”…right now, its “Not Set”

 Want to go to the Timeline>Begin chapter  Open the dropdown and select your first chapter (Begin for me):

 Or use the drag method

Using either method: when the PLAY FILM button is clicked, play the movie

Preview so far  Can choose File>Preview or

 Select the NTSC main menu (NTSC_Projector Menu) in the Project area  Right-click and choose Preview From Here

 Test by clicking your Play Film button  Close the preview window

Routing the Scene Selection button

What do we want to do if the Scene Selection link is clicked?

Submenus

 When someone clicks the Scene Selection button on the main menu page, we want to show the Scene Selection page/screen.  This means we need to "wire" the Scene Selection button on the main menu, to the submenu,  Select the SCENE SELECTION button

 In the Link dropdown, choose NTSC_Projector_Submenu>Default OR…use the whip

 The result:

 We’re done with the main menu page  Save As CatsDVDEncore1

Test

Select the main menu in the Project window, right-click and choose to Preview from here … Wire the submenu Buttons

 Open the submenu screen (Double-click it)  We need 5 buttons, but only have four:  Copy/Paste one of the four  Now, link each chapter “button” to the proper chapter stop (all five)  So far:  Save As CatsDVDEncore2

Change Button Text

 Use the Text tool and select the words CHAPTER 1 and change to Play , or Play movie

 Change the other button’s text

 Be sure all buttons are linked to the corresponding chapter

MAIN TITLE and MAIN MENU “buttons”  Change the MAIN TITLE text to say SCENES (It isn’t a linkable button in this particular submenu)

o Link Main Menu back arrow on submenu to the main menu Default o Select the back arrow o As the Link, choose the Main menu>Default The other (right-facing) button won’t do anything. If we had a second page of buttons, we would link to that screen

End Actions

 End actions are optional: Specify what to do when a given item finishes

Scenarios:

 Play button on Main Menu is pushed  Play button on Submenu is pushed  A Button on submenu is pushed

End Action for the Main Menu

 When the main menu “ends”, (the viewer has watched the movie) let’s loop back to the Main Menu screen  That is, make the End Action property link back to the Main Menu  Start by selecting the Main Menu in the Project window

 Then click End Action in the Properties window, and choose the main menu:  So, if the viewer watches the movie via the Main Menu, control will go back to the Main Menu when the movie ends  What if they watched the movie from the submenu?  That’s next

End Action for Sub Menu Screen, Play button

The viewer clicked Play in the submenu

 Select the submenu in the Project window  As the End Action, set it to go back to the submenu screen:

What if the viewer watched the movie via one of the buttons on the submenu?

The movie will then play to the end End Action for last chapter stop

Assume they want to go back to the Main Menu…it’s up to you!!

 Double-click the last chapter stop to select it

 In the End Action box, choose the main menu:

Motion Menus

 Select any chapter stop  Click the submenu in the Project window  There will now be a motion tab:  Click the Animate Buttons check box

Now, need to make several tiny video clips, one for each submenu choice

 Choose File>Render>Motion Buttons  Check for errors (Build>Build) Finally, Build the Disc:

 File>Build>Disc

Ignore any errors … Have fun
