1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO CONGRATULATE HARRISON REARDEN FOR HIS 12 MANY YEARS OF PUBLIC SERVICE AND REQUEST THAT 13 THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NAME THE 14 INTERCHANGE LOCATED AT THE INTERSECTION OF 15 SOUTH CAROLINA HIGHWAY 277 AND FONTAINE ROAD 16 IN RICHLAND COUNTY “HARRISON REARDEN 17 INTERCHANGE” AND ERECT APPROPRIATE MARKERS 18 OR SIGNS AT THIS INTERCHANGE THAT CONTAIN THE 19 WORDS “HARRISON REARDEN INTERCHANGE”. 20 21 Whereas, the Honorable Harrison Rearden, a native of Edgefield 22 County, after completing his undergraduate studies at South 23 Carolina State University, did his graduate work at Fisk and 24 Indiana University; and 25 26 Whereas, Harrison Rearden is an exemplary leader and manager 27 with a career spanning more than fortyfive years which include 28 experiences as a secondary school teacher, district manager in the 29 life insurance industry, Sergeant with the United States Army 30 Reserve for ten years, and twentynine years in state government, 31 from which he retired; and 32 33 Whereas, throughout his adult life, Mr. Rearden has unselfishly 34 given of himself in public service which began with his 35 participation in the civil rights movement and continues to this 36 day; and 37 38 Whereas, among the many boards, commissions, and committees 39 on which he has served, Mr. Rearden is a member of the deacon 40 ministry in his church; executive board member of the United 41 Baptist Deacons of Columbia; regional board member of the 42 American Lung Association and the Blue Ridge Institute; past

[64] 1 1 board member of the Central South Carolina Alliance; board 2 member of the Action Council of South Carolina and the South 3 Carolina State Employees Association; advisory board member to 4 the Salvation Army; member of the Columbia Luncheon Club; 5 chairman of the Meadowlake voting precinct; former chairman of 6 the Columbia Metropolitan Airport Commission; and former 7 member of the Commissioners Steering Committee, Airport 8 Council of North America; and 9 10 Whereas, he serves as the Sixth District Commissioner of the 11 South Carolina Department of Transportation, and past chairman 12 of the Enhancement and Invitations and Resolutions Committees 13 of the Commission; and 14 15 Whereas, throughout the breath and length of his tenure on the 16 various boards, commissions, and committees, Harrison Rearden 17 has had his faithful wife at his side, Alethia, sharing in his 18 successes at every turn; and 19 20 Whereas, it is fitting and proper to congratulate Harrison Rearden 21 for his many years of public service and to recognize the 22 tremendous contributions that this son of South Carolina has made 23 to his state and this nation by naming a highway facility in his 24 honor. Now, therefore, 25 26 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 27 concurring: 28 29 That the members of the General Assembly congratulate Harrison 30 Rearden for his many years of public service and request the 31 Department of Transportation name the interchange located at the 32 intersection of South Carolina Highway 277 and Fontaine Road in 33 Richland County “Harrison Rearden Interchange” and erect 34 appropriate markers or signs at this interchange that contain the 35 words “Harrison Rearden Interchange”. 36 37 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 38 the Department of Transportation. 39 XX 40
