Course aims: Communicate in a friendly atmosphere with an emphasis on pair and group interaction. Improve and consolidate your speaking and listening skills together with the exploration of culture in society, backed up by an understanding of grammar. Students will be encouraged to develop their reading and writing skills and regular assignments will be set.

Course description:

In this course you will learn to speak and understand Italian with activities based on authentic materials and everyday interactions. You will also gain an insight into Italian culture, cuisine and society. The tutor is a native Italian speaker.

Any prior knowledge or entry requirements?

A very basic knowledge of Italian is required.

Course content: what topics will the course cover?

- Describing a city, a neighbourhood, a street - Meeting up with friends: time and places - Asking and giving information about your family: physical and character description - Past tense (1): talking about your weekend - Past tense (2): a party. Expressing likes and dislikes - At a restaurant: ordering food and booking a table - Understanding hotel brochures: visit a new city and booking a hotel - At the market and supermarket: enquiring about food and prices - How to get there: asking and giving directions (formally and informally) - Communicative games and Italian traditions Teaching, learning and assessment methods: tick those to be used  Demonstration Discussion x Group work x Individual work x Project work Research Role play x Written work x Activity outside class Question and answer x Observation x Practical work x time Other (state) Presentation x Field trip

How will I receive feedback on my learning progress and achievement?

Every week students will be asked to prepare at home a short communicative task to show, in couple with a role play, to the classroom. In this way they will get used to speak from the beginning in the target language and be able to monitor their progress. Listening test will be provided to check the students’ understanding of the spoken language as well as small multiple choice tests, to check their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary

Learning outcomes: these are the intended outcomes and may be revised in discussion with the class. Students are encouraged to think about and identify their own individual outcomes. By the end of the course, students should be able to:

- Describe the physical aspect and the character of a person - Talk about past events

- Express likes and dislikes in the past tense - Interact in Italian in a few basic situations

Reading and information sources: Is any reading/preparation essential or desirable?

Titles of three Easy Readers will be provided as well as some guidelines about topics and grammar covered in the first term

Suggestions for progression to further study or for using the skills and knowledge gained: Watching videos on different topics and listening to Italian music will provide authentic access to the Italian culture and will improve students’ listening skills.
