Aleks Prep for Precalculus Spring 2016 FRCC-Larimer

Section: MAT 166-602 Alan Dinwiddie Required: Yes Why: For less than the cost of one hour of tutoring, students have been more successful in Precalculus using Aleks. Cost: $38 if ordered online through McGraw Hill, or $50.75 through the FRCC Bookstore (can use financial aid in bookstore). What is it: Aleks is a web-based, artificially intelligent assessment and learning system. ALEKS uses adaptive questioning to quickly and accurately determine exactly what a student knows and doesn't know in a course. ALEKS then instructs the student on the topics he/she is most ready to learn. Topics: The Prep for Precalculus covers the prerequisite knowledge that is necessary to be successful in Precalculus. It includes topics like fractions, percent, solving equations, exponent rules, polynomials, factoring, quadratic equations, graphing, radical expressions, functions, etc. Timeline: The first two weeks of MAT 166 will be a review of prerequisite topics. The primary homework during this time will be to work in Aleks. The Aleks Prep will need to be completed by the end of the third week of the semester Start Aleks Prep: January 20, 2016 (or any time after this date) End Aleks Prep: February 8, 2016 (this is when Aleks is due for a grade. You can continue to work in Aleks for another 3 weeks)

Grading: The work in Aleks will be worth 5% of your total grade. Portion of Aleks Pie completed Grade for Aleks portion of grade 50% 20% 55% 30% 60% 40% 65% 50% 70% 60% 75% 70% 80% 80% 85% 100% For example, if you complete 85% of the Aleks Pie, you will have a 100% (A) grade for the Aleks portion of your course grade. Complete 75% of the Pie and you will have a 70% (C) grade for Aleks.
