Application for Griswold Senior Internship Fellows Program

This award of up to $3000* is being offered due support from the Olga T. Griswold Chair Funds. The award is for registered UCSC undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Studies who are currently doing or planning to do a senior internship or thesis that informs and promotes land conservation and/or restoration in California. Students must be working with both a faculty sponsor and an agency sponsor to ensure that the results are linked to actual conservation and restoration efforts. Examples include but are not limited to evaluating different restoration methods, developing a monitoring plan, doing a GIS analysis prioritizing sites for conservation, or evaluating a specific policy approach to further land conservation. Criteria for selection include the quality and utility of the project as described in the project statement; demonstrated student initiative and appropriate past training; scholastic record; financial need; and support of both the faculty and agency sponsor.

1 Griswold Fellowship Application Guidelines Applicants are required to submit a draft proposal to a faculty member, graduate student mentor, and/or agency sponsor for review and feedback prior to applying. Past experience shows that proposals that do not undergo such a review are unlikely to be competitive for funding. All students receiving awards will be asked to provide a photo, 1 paragraph summary of the work, and a copy of the final product. Your application packet should contain an electronic copy of the following 1)This completed application form 2)A project statement (maximum 1,200 words) that includes: a. Name(s) and Title of the project b. Background and justification for project c. Demonstrated initiative and preparation (what training/skills do you have that make you well prepared the project and your progress on the project to date) d. Plan for implementation: goals, questions, or hypotheses; and methodology e. Description of how the project will further land conservation and restoration in California. f. Timeline: schedule and a date of submission of the final product.

3)A printout of your class list with grades from your student portal. Your financial aid records will also be reviewed. 4)Short letters of support from both the agency and faculty sponsors: Both your faculty and agency sponsors need to send a short email (300 words maximum) to [email protected] that: - Briefly discusses of how they think the project will further land restoration and/or conservation in California - Confirms that they have discussed the project, reviewed the proposal, and consider that the applicant is well prepared to complete the project - Describes the support/mentoring they will give to the applicant. 5)Applications should be emailed to [email protected] with the email header “Griswold Fellows Application “Student Last Name(s)”. Please attach a single pdf document that includes items 1-3 above (a scanned application form; the project statement, and a printout of grades). Sponsors letters should be sent separately.
