Duties of Third and Fourth-Year Medical Students

DUTIES OF THIRD AND FOURTH-YEAR MEDICAL STUDENTS

A. CALL SCHEDULE - every fourth night until 7 pm; 24-hr Saturday/Sunday admitting day.

B. WORKING HOURS - from morning work rounds through evening checkout rounds, including Saturday morning rounds and nights on call.

C. CONFERENCES (see weekly conference schedule)

D. PATIENT WRITE-UPS: 3rd-Year: Please see your Syllabus for 3rd year expectations. 4th-Year (AI): You will be expected to work-up all patients admitted the nights you are on call.

E. SUPERVISION: 1) Attendings: Drs. Cykert, Joines, Lane, Phifer, Rogers, Tullo, Campbell, and Hatcher, Chief Resident (B Service), Private faculty (A Service, special rotations) 2) JAR/SAR 3) First-year house officers (interns)

F. PATIENT ASSIGNMENTS will be done by your supervising resident.

G. ATTENDING ROUNDS. "B" Service check-out rounds with the night float or cross cover begin at 7:00 a.m. "A" Service rounds will be arranged with private attending and house staff team. You will present the patients you write up. Have X-rays, ECG, rhythm strips,and pertinent laboratory work at hand for your presentations. You are expected to know your patients well enough that you can: 1) Present them briefly and concisely without reliance on notes. 2) Enumerate their problems and differential diagnoses. 3) Discuss your plans for evaluation and treatment of each problem. 4) Join actively in a discussion where your patient's problems may serve as prototype to other cases you may encounter.

H. For each PATIENT you WORK UP, look at peripheral blood smears if anemic or otherwise relevant, look at urines, and do other lab work as appropriate (such as Gram stains, sputum analyses, joint fluid analyses, stool examination, and CSF fluid analysis).

I. DAILY PROGRESS NOTES: you will be responsible for writing daily progress notes on the patients you follow. These notes are part of the legal medical record. Therefore, they should accurately reflect the data, assessment, and plans for patient care. Make sure you understand the assessment and plans before writing your notes. If you do not understand or do not know what the plans are, then talk with your intern before writing your note.

J. THIRD-YEAR STUDENTS will have regular sessions with faculty members (See 3rd year seminar schedule for exact times).

K. Toward the end of the rotation, each student will MEET WITH his/her ATTENDING faculty member, or one of the other faculty members, for a check-out session. Whenever possible, a mid-month evaluation will also be arranged. L. It is the policy of the UNC School of Medicine that ORDERS written by medical students MUST BE COUNTERSIGNED before being acted upon.

MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

A. HOUSING: Students will be housed in apartments which are within 200 yards of Moses Cone Hospital. Parking is available at the apartments. During regular daytime hours, keys for the apartment may be obtained at the AHEC Office or you may pick them up at your orientation. In order to stay in student housing, you must sign a student housing agreement on the first day of your rotation.

B. MEALS Meals are available in the hospital cafeteria at a 20% discount for students and employees of the hospital.
